Dante scared the hell out of me, though. I knew I should have run, but I didn’t.

My name is Romeo... and, Mr. Bonetti, I need a job. Here’s my resumé.” Then Nico fell over laughing once more, but Dante, who had my heart racing, and my cock kicked up when he snatched the resumé from my hand and read it, then threw it on the bar, and sneered at me.

“All this is shit. It’s fabricated,” he said to Nico. “We need someone good at math, numbers remember, to handle the books. He’s not qualified. The little shit just got out of high school. And I bet he didn’t graduate from high school.”

“Yes, I did. It’s right there on my resumé. Maybe you can’t read. I never wrote anything that’s not true. I enrolled in college for two semesters. Did you even go to college and graduate?”

“He got you there, Dante. Yes, my brother did go to college. It’s what our mother wanted. But Dante left the year he was supposed to graduate.”

And Dante glared at me, as if he could kill me on the spot if Nico wasn’t standing in the way. Then Nico took the paper and tore it up. “See, Dante, you could never replace me, because you don’t see the big picture. On that one piece of paper he forged and misrepresented himself. That is the kind of boy we need. Someone who isn’t afraid to do something illegal.” Nico stared at me. “Are you good at math?”

“On my high school transcript it shows I have all A’s and in college, I was on the Dean’s list.”

Turning with a wide grin. “Were you ever on the Dean’s list, Dante?” Nico questioned. Dante narrowed his glance and mumbled at me when he passed, brushing against my shoulder. “You don’t know who your friends are you smartass. I told you before to get your pretty ass out of here.”

I leaned in to Dante, and whispered, “I don’t remember you saying it like that. If I had I’d have given you my phone number.”

Dante’s complexion went from a natural tan to a deep red, and he narrowed his eyes. “You’re going to get what you’re looking for.”

“Is that a promise?”

“I’ll promise you one thing, if you get involved with my brother, you’ll get more than you’re looking for.”

“Romeo, don’t let Dante scare you. It’s me you have to worry about.”

Dante strode to the back of the club.

I was smart enough to recognize the truth when I heard it.

Chapter 14

Romeo

“Now. What’s your name again?” I offered Nico the name I’d been given in high school because I played Shakespeare’s character so convincingly that everyone, including the most beautiful girl in my senior class really believed I was straight.

Nico slanted his head to the side and offered me a devilish grin as his full lips slid up to the right. Finally he got around to asking, and I felt a cold stream shiver up my spine, when he said, “I have plans for you, my boy. Everyone I hire has to stay in my compound in Jersey. You’ll work here during the day, and travel home with me at night.”

Oh fuck me.

“Get your things and meet me here about nine tonight.” It didn’t work out that way. Another sinister smile, this one closed and tilted up on both sides of his handsome face. “We’ll talk about your pay later... And, Romeo, don’t let me have to send my men after you.” I headed for the door a little less confident than when I had strolled into this bar, which wasn’t that great in the beginning.

Then I stopped with shaky legs and turned to meet his dreamy dark eyes. I didn’t understand it because as much as I thought he was a dreamy dude, I wasn’t that much attracted to him. Maybe it was because I felt he could kill me if I didn’t do what he wanted. Oh fuck, fuck. I’d walked into some shit, and I was up to my knees in it. All I could think about was how I was going to get out of this before I’d even started.

Yet, I did manage to tell him, “My name is Romeo, that’s all.” That was to keep him from asking me more—my real name and where I was from. I was sure he heard my Midwest accent, but he never commented. Perhaps he was more interested in my package and whether I was up to being fucked from ear to ear.

Nico offered me an illustrious smile and a chuckle. “I like that... Romeo.” He looked around the room at the faces who weren’t entertained by the thought of someone by the name of Romeo getting too close to the head of their family. Like the dude with the surly good looks. “Did you hear that? A good old-fashioned Italian name. You have an Italian name... Romeo.”

I didn’t tell him it wasn’t my real name, just a name I picked up in high school because I played the lead in the play Romeo and Juliet. I wasn’t Italian. I was German Irish with dark hair and blue eyes. But I didn’t know how he’d feel because I thought I knew from the movies all the Italians in his type of business looked at an outsider with suspicion. But what did I have to lose? I’d later learn—plenty.

The Boss had welcomed me into his arms, so fuck the rest. And fuck that good-looking dude, Dante, who had my heart skipping along.

I hadn’t expected to be driven to Nico’s home complete with bodyguards and a suspicious driver. “Romeo, it’s better if my men drive you to the hotel and then to Jersey. I have to get you acquainted with what I expect out of you.”

What about my math skills? I wondered.

When I was shown the door, and after I tried to make a pass at Dante, I was forced into the limo.

“You have to take me to my hotel to pick up my things.”
