“Always.” Then Nico resumed his conversation.

“Since Alonzo dropped off the grid and left without giving his crew orders or appointing the next man in charge while he was gone, the talk on the street is that something must have happened to him. You know Alonzo believed in taking care of things himself. One of my men said that he was looking for you. He thought you would turn on me because we had several disagreements and one was you didn’t like to take orders from me.”

“That’s not true. I carried out all your orders since we took over our Dad’s businesses. I was always loyal to you until you went too far. One was Alonzo’s brother, and the other was Rome.”

“I may have gone too far.”

“You’re fucking right you went too far. That boy didn’t deserve to be put in a situation where all he did was accept a job from you.”

“Get to the point—” Nico appeared bothered by the conversation.

“The point is, Nico. It’s over, and if you have a contract on me, or him, then pull it because it’s not going to end well.” Dante cut a glance my way. I hoped he didn’t think we were a team because as much as I loved Dante, that team stuff was where I got off. I frowned at him, and he smiled and mouthed, “Kidding.”

“To get back to the conversation and why I called you, Alonzo’s crew is without someone to lead them, and I’ve taken over. But there is one thing. I don’t want this anymore either. I’m getting out, and now you have your chance.”

“I don’t want it. You’ve controlled things for so long that your men will not listen to me. They don’t think I can handle the day-to-day operation of managing a crew and those casinos and restaurants, and to tell you the truth, I’m not up to that.”

“I know what you’re capable of doing, Dante. And I say you can do it. Why don’t you come back to Jersey and let me go on my honeymoon, and you take over for a short time and see if you want this. I’ll release all your funds to you, and you can stay in the mansion. I heard you gave Mary that apartment you bought.”

I felt jealous of that Mary not because I thought Dante still loved her, but because he’d been with her and now he was mine. He’d been mine the day I was born, even if I didn’t know it. I felt it. I knew he would be my destiny.

“I’ll have to discuss that with Rome. We’re a couple now.”

I heard the loud peal of laughter.

“If you say so, Dante. I know how loyal you are. That boy must have done something to you to make you change overnight the way you have...”

I’d done something to him alright. I’d taken this man and lost myself inside him, and he’d been surprised that he’d enjoyed what we’d done and what I’d done to him. It was a breathless moment reminding me of how much I’d enjoyed being and loving Dante even under the specter of death.

“If I return to Jersey it’s just to give you a break and nothing more. I want my men around me and not those criminals and murderers you have in your crew. You need to get them under control before I return, and tell them that I’ll take over for a few months. I’ll give you two months and I’m leaving whether you’re back or not. Can you agree to that?”

“I can agree,” Nico said, but I heard something in his voice that may have escaped Dante. I was the one with him when he wanted to take me to his bed, and the anger that rose in his voice when he couldn’t get what he wanted from me or perhaps anyone who’d refused his advances. Take for example Alonzo’s brother. I’d learn about him from Dante when he became pissed with me because I wouldn’t listen to him and put both of us in a predicament I wasn’t ready for.

I heard Nico’s conversation clearly, and I didn’t trust a word from Nico’s mouth, and why would anyone? Because he was a murderer and a liar and could never be trusted.

I thought Dante’s tragic flaw was trusting his brother too much. I was an outside man who could be replaced with someone else if he didn’t want me, or if Nico lied on me.

The notion came to my mind. I didn’t know if I could act on it, but you never knew what you might do if someone threatened your life. Therefore, I developed a plan. A plan I wouldn’t diverge to Dante because he would stop me or think I’d lost my mind.

“You aren’t thinking about going back to Jersey are you?”

“I have to go. I gave Nico my word that I would take over for him just for a few weeks. We don’t have anything to worry about because Alonzo is in the lake and he can’t threaten Nico or us.”

“That’s what I’m worried about. Nico has buried all the bodies except me and you are his brother, and if he gets upset over anything, then you being his brother will not matter.”

“I know Nico.”

“Does anyone know anyone that well? So, I guess we’re going back to New Jersey.”

“If you want to be with me. I have to go, Rome.” He quietly strode over to me and held me around my waist. “Can I get a kiss? You are sexy when you pout.”

I wasn’t pouting. I was angry because Dante was too soft with Nico and had on blinders and that was why I loved him and that was why I was worried for us.

“Be ready to leave in an hour.”

“Can we fly back to Jersey?”

“It will take too long and someone would be able to connect us to Nevada. We need to drive.” Then I turned and Dante swatted me on the ass. “Nice ass. I’m getting hot thinking about it. And your dick fits nicely inside me.”
