When I opened the door, the waiters were bringing in food. “Put it over there.” I extended my hand to indicate the large dining table. “Mr. Bonetti will be here shortly, or he can order some more if it gets cold.” I raised the cover of a plate and grabbed some Italian bread with butter and bit a piece, then placed it on the table and left with the servers.

When they headed to the service elevators, I stepped into the guest one. When I reached the limo the driver had the door open, and I climbed inside. Then I noticed after sitting for a few minutes the driver didn’t start the motor or move.

I knocked on the glass partition, and he pretended not to hear me, but glanced up in the mirror, and then the door opened to the car. “Get out.” The voice was surly, disrespectful, and downright rude.

“Leave me alone.” Turning to meet Dante’s eyes I knew that voice, and the coldness it contained.

“If you don’t get out, then I’m going to drag you out.”

“That’s not a good look for a man of your standing,” I reminded him. “How does that look to the public and your men if I scream you’re trying to kill me.”

“They’d think it was Nico. It’s his limo.”

“Not just any scream. Suppose I scream as if you’re beating me.”

“If you don’t get out of this car, I’m going to take you out and paddle your ass and you can call that a beating if you want, I don’t give a rat’s ass.” His voice was rising then lowering.

“At least I’d think you cared how I felt, but inside your office, you made me feel like a fool in front of your girlfriend.”

“Will you get out and let me explain. There’s a perfectly good dinner and bottle of wine going to waste in my suite. Are you going to let that go to waste and not to mention that beautiful view with the one you love.”

“Speak for yourself,” I shot back.

“I am speaking for me, now get out and come with me before I’m forced to do everything I said I’d do, because I’m no gentleman and you’re about to put that to the test.”

I blew out a large breath. “I guess I could listen to your argument, but I have some place to go and people to see.”

I tried to hold on to my dignity if there was such a thing with men.

Chapter 18

Romeo

Dante held out his hand, and I placed my palm in his, and he reached and pulled me up and to him. And I felt his body. I felt his covered cock pulsating against mine. I glanced up at him, and he didn’t smile, but for the hunger in his eyes which told all I wanted to know.

“Can we talk inside and not out here?”

Without out a word from me, and ready to forgive him if he told me the right thing about that woman. The right thing could be a lie and I would forgive. The right thing would be, “I love you,” and I would forgive him. In other words, I just wanted him to make some excuse for what I’d walked into, an excuse I could believe. If he needed me to give him one I would. That was just how desperate I’d become for his love.

When we strolled into the elevator taking us up to his penthouse, there was piped music and there was a song that got into my head and wouldn’t let me go. It started with, “I’ll do anything for love, but I won’t do that.”

“Who’s singing that song?” I questioned.

“That’s a dude name Meatloaf.” I smiled.

“What kind of name is that? And why is he named Meatloaf.”

“That’s another story,” Dante said. “Can we get back to our story,” he said as the elevator opened into his beautiful suite, one I thought I’d never see again.

Stepping inside, the lights were low and Italian music was playing. A few candles were lit on the table. “Sit down. You must be hungry. If this food is not to your liking I can have the staff cook you something special.”

I waited until he threw down his coat on the sofa and pulled out my chair and sat across from me. Although the food looked tempting and the flowers were a great touch, I needed an explanation. “Tell me who that woman was in your office.” He hesitated and his eyes blinked as if he thought I’d forgotten what happened.

“The woman in my arms was Mary.”

I stood and headed for the door. I heard his footsteps on the tiled floor and felt his arms reach for me.

“You asked me and I told you. But it’s not what you think.”
