The wind sent some litter tumbling across the parking lot. He punched in a code and opened the door. Golden light spilled out, cast over the woman’s face.

Wren.

He waved a hand for her to enter first. She did, and he silently closed the door behind them. “Straight to the end of the hall. Door on your right.”

She stopped dead. “Where are you taking me?”

“I promise I’ll explain more once we’re inside. You don’t need to be afraid.”

“That’s exactly what someone who intends to harm me would say!”

Her sassy comeback caught him off guard.

“Am I being sex-trafficked?”

His brows pinched. “Hell no.”

“Is this a whorehouse?”

“Jesus. Not at all. Come on. They’re waiting for me.” He didn’t wait for her to follow him. Truth was, she could turn around and run right back out that door and no one would stop her. Of course, shedidn’t know that.

Her footsteps sounded quietly behind him.

As soon as he entered the room stacked with computer equipment and surveillance screens, three people spun in their chairs to look at him. Julius, Livingston and Lark had all been manning the system.

Jennings was about to fuck up their night.

“The prodigal son has returned.” His brother Julius’s dry drawl prompted a huff of a laugh from Livingston.

“Took ya long enough, Abel.” Quaide Livingston looked past him and fixed his stare on Wren.

No point in sugar-coating things. “I fucked up.”

Julius slowly pushed to his feet. Livingston did the opposite and leaned back in his chair. Lark just clucked her tongue like a sad mother hen whose chicks didn’t cooperate.

“Who do you have with you?” Livingston asked.

“This is a witness.”

Julius eyed Wren as though she were strapped with explosives. “Witness to what exactly?”

“We were at the church. We got back from the run—don’t worry, I’ll fill you all in—and some asshole started abusing her.”

Lark popped to her feet, and Livingston straightened in his seat.

Wren banded her arms across her chest in a protective pose. On the surface, she appeared collected, but all of them could plainly see that her hair wasn’t bobbing around her shoulders from the air currents in the room. She was trembling.

Again, that strong urge to touch her and put her at ease rolled through him.

“Get Lexis in here. He needs to hear this,” Jennings said to Lark.

She issued a low sigh. “I’m warning you. He’s already been awake for thirty hours. You know how he gets all hopped up on energy drinks.” She walked out of the room to fetch their team leader and her significant other. When Lark passed Wren, Jennings noted how Wren dropped her gaze to Lark’s midsection and the very obvious baby she carried front and center on her small frame.

He captured Wren’s attention. “Can I get you something to drink?”

“Um…no.”

He took that as her needing a drink but refusing in case they’d laced it with some drug that would knock her out.
