She swallowed.Everyonewas staring at her.

An electric current seemed to hover in the air between Lexis and Lark.

“At least her bomb didn’t explode.” Dove’s statement had Quaide’s brows pinching into a thunderous expression. “What a way to lose a vehicle,” she continued.

“But you gained me…” The man’s voice was gruff, almost tender.

“And for it,youlost a house.”

“Totally worth it.”

Wren’s attention bounced back and forth between all four of them, trying to understand, to focus on what they were saying and the meaning behind bringing it up. But she couldn’t.

She turned to Avalynn. “Why do you look familiar?”

The woman pushed out a heavy sigh. “Tell me you haven’t seen all of me.”

She blinked at her in confusion.

“Please don’t let it be the sex tape.”

Wren bit off a chunk of her sandwich. “Forget I asked.”

“Wren, we’ve come up with some details about our plan that you need to know.” Jennings twisted in his seat to look at her. Even with several feet between them, she felt a strong pull to the man, like he held a cord that was pinned to her.

Lexis cleared his throat, gaining her attention. “Jennings is taking you back. You’ll be allowed to go on with your life.”

Allowed to? What was he saying?

Jennings’s dark gaze penetrated her. “You’ll be playing a role, Wren, same as me. While we figure out what went down with your brother, we lie low.”

She set down the remainder of her sandwich, her stomach in knots again.

“One stipulation. You can’t call and check on your brother in the rehab.” Jennings didn’t sound even a little bit sorry to drop this bombshell on her.

“Why not?”

“The Disciples could check your phone any time.”

“I don’t want anything to do with that gang.”

“I know, but now you’re waist-deep in it. You need protection that I can give you. And I could use your help too. If you play the part of my girlfriend, you’re in the club. The women always talk. You report everything to me.”

Her heartbeat tripled. Act like his girlfriend?

“I promise I’ll protect you and get you out of this mess as soon as possible. But you have to trust me and do as I tell you. Got it?”

Her stomach churned. The food felt like a lead ball in the pit of her stomach. Did she have a choice? Yes. But she wanted Danny to be safe more.

“Fine.”

Lark settled a hand on Wren’s arm. “Obviously you know Jennings is undercover. He’s really good. He’ll protect you.”

She jerked her head up to look at Lark in surprise. “He already has.”

“And you have to protect him too, by following his direction. Outing him to the club he’s been infiltrating for months is dangerous to him,” Lexis added.

She straightened her spine. “I don’t know what to doto protect Jennings, but I’ll do anything to save my brother.”
