“Nothing to prove. I’m good.”

“You’re not good. You take too many risks.”

In the background, he caught his brother, Julius’s, voice. “I should be in there undercover, not Jennings.”

Irritation rippled through Jennings. His asshole brothers had somehow convinced the rest of the Sentry team that Jennings was incapable.

“Just because I’m the little brother doesn’t mean I don’t know what I’m doing.”

He ended the call and jumped into the fray.

As soon as Wren got home, she wanted two things: a shower and her bed. Ever since that patient at the nursing home had gotten sick all over herself, Wren craved hot water and plenty of soap. Anything to get the scent of it out of her head.

She’d benefit from heat on her sore muscles too. Being an LPN meant she got the worst jobs in the establishment. One of the tasks she performed most was lifting patients and moving them around to keep them from getting bedsores.

She pulled into the parking lot of her apartment building and cut the engine. With a sigh, she looked up at her apartment door—and froze.

All the air wheezed out of her lungs at the sight of a man standing in her open doorway. She never handed out keys to her place. Nobody knew where she hid it either. The only person who would know that…

“Danny!” The name exploded from her with a mix of concern and joy. She jumped out of the car, grabbed her purse by the long strap and ran for the door.

If nothing was wrong, he wouldn’t be here. But the closer she got to her brother, the more she realized it was worse than she first thought.

At ten paces away, she caught his stare while closing the gap between them. When she reached him, her nostrils pinched at the horrid reek coming off him.

Any other person would throw a drug addict right out of their house, brother or not. Especially when he broke in.

But she pressed a hand to Danny’s chest and shoved him inside. She slammed the door shut behind them and dropped her purse on the floor.

“What the hell are you doing in my apartment?”

“I didn’t have anywhere to go.” His eyes darted left and right. His hair was unwashed and hung in lank tendrils around his face. It looked like he hadn’t bathed in a week or more. That accounted for the smell.

“Sis. You gotta help me. The guy fell. Hefell.”

Her chest tightened more than it usually did when Danny came around. Usually he only asked for money.

“Who fell? And how? Did he trip?” She had training. She could help.

He shook his head hard. “My buddy pulled a knife. It was so dark, but I saw the blade. He…fell!”

Wren pushed out a sigh. She should have thrown her kid brother out of the apartment when she had the chance.

“You’re high, Danny. What are you on this time?”

“I’m not onanything. Not today, anyway. The guy fell, Wren. I’m tellin’ you, he murdered him!”

Her medical training kicked in again. If Danny didn’t use any substances today, it was possible he was experiencing hallucinations from withdrawal. He most likely had come to her hoping she’d give him money for his next fix.

“Look, Danny—”

“The drug dealer killed someone in front of me!”

His earnest tone got her attention. She searched his eyes and saw for once they were clear.

“Tell me what happened, Danny.”
