She met Jennings’s stare. All at once, she recognized what it was that she saw in his eyes.

Admiration.

Chapter Ten

Wren stripped off the latex gloves and dropped them into the wastebasket. Though Jennings saw the fatigue etched on her face—along with a big measure of concern—her shoulders were thrust back and her head held high.

“He still needs a hospital,” she announced to those left in the room. Many had run out at the first sight of blood and several more during her patching up Matthews.

She swung her gaze to Kojak. He stood a few feet away from the table where the patient lay, knocked out from the pills and booze he’d swallowed.

“He needs antibiotics. Can you get them?” Her tone had several people sucking in breaths of shock.

Jennings took a swift step forward, prepared to die on this hill for Wren in the event the president of the Disciples took offense to her challenge.

Kojak cocked an eyebrow at Jennings. Then he gave a single nod. “We’ll get some.”

He spotted the warning in the prez’s eyes. Right now, he had to heed it or lose his tenuous position in the club’s favor.

Holding out a hand to Wren, Jennings shot her a quelling look that made her small chin jut in reaction.

Before she could say or do anything else to jeopardize them, he led her out of the room. As soon as they hit the hallway leading to the room they’d laid claim to, she tugged at his hand.

“That man can’t stay on the table. Those idiots need instruction—”

Shutting her up was the only thought in his mind at that moment. If the Disciples heard her calling them idiots, they’d take offense and send her packing—and him with her.

He cupped her face and slammed his lips over hers. At first contact, she stiffened. Then melted.

Her mouth softened under his. He dragged in a deep breath of air, thinking to pull her sweet, perfumed essence into his head. Instead, his nostrils pinched at the scent of the blood coating her.

He broke the kiss and wordlessly hauled her the rest of the way to the bedroom. As soon as he closed and locked the door behind them, he strode to the bathroom and switched on the shower.

She drifted to the doorway, staring down at her blood-soaked shirt. She hesitated only a blink before stripping the shirt off and dropping it to the floor. Her jeans followed.

As she hooked her thumbs in the sides of her panties, she froze and met his gaze. “I’m late for work!”

“You just did your work, baby. Get in the shower.”

“I can’t just call off. I need that money to pay for Danny’s rehab!”

“I’ll cover it.”

She gaped at him.

His lips twisted. “Guess I found another way to keep you from talking.”

Her eyes flashed bright with anger. “You kissed me to shut me up.”

“And I’ll do it again. But Wren, I need you to play better with these guys. You stick out too much. I need you to blend in to keep my cover. Can you do that?”

She stared at him. A red flush climbed her throat. “I’m sorry. I didn’t realize that I’m blowing it.”

“I asked you to help Matthews. But the Disciples expect everyone—especially women—to keep quiet and do as ordered.”

She nodded. “I understand. I’ll do better. I don’t want to put you in jeopardy.”

Unable to just stand there and not touch the half-naked woman, he took her by the upper arms. “Make no mistake—I wanted to kiss you. Iwantto kiss you. All the time. But we have to guard what we say, and I couldn’t risk you offending somebody in the club. I’m close, Wren. So damn close I can feel the steel of the handcuffs I’ll slap on their wrists.”
