Neither was Avalynn. The pair seemed to be deep in conversation. Avalynn caressed her small baby bump. Jennings gave Julius a sharp look of concern with a nod toward his sister-in-law.

Julius leaned in to say something to her, and she gave him a distracted nod before continuing her conversation with Wren. Jennings tuned in to their discussion.

“You could try some teas for the nausea,” Wren was telling Avalynn. She reached out and pulled the woman’s water glass a bit closer to her. “Try sipping something often.”

“Thanks, Wren. The other ladies stopped suffering from pregnancy nausea months ago, and I’m still living through it.”

Jennings eyed Wren. She was so giving with her time, but she could use a fattening meal too. He plucked a thick slice of homemade bread from the basket, slathered it in butter and held it out to her.

She took it with a smile that lit up her eyes. Watching her bring the soft crust to her lips and nibble at it gave him pleasure.

In fact, taking care of her filled him with a warmth he never experienced before.

Looking around the table at Lexis, Livingston and Julius, he noted the way each man doted on his significant other. Lexis and Livingston were engaged in a lively conversation, but Lexis still reached over to rest his big hand on Lark’s belly and the child they’d created.

Jennings focused on Wren. An overwhelming urge to stake his claim on her bubbled inside him.

He was…

No, that couldn’t be.

It was too soon to fall in love with her.

But he knew the important things about her—her core of steel, her drive and fortitude. Her sweet nature shone through to the people she cared for. And the sexy woman who demanded that he pleasure her was a whole other dimension to her.

He could almost feel her arms around him as they leaned into the curves on his bike. From the beginning, she’d placed her trust in him. They’d placed trust in each other.

The fate of the op that he’d spent months working on lay in her hands. One word from her would put his life in jeopardy.

When he glanced up from his plate, he caught Lark staring at him. Understanding flashed in her eyes.

Don’t say anything to her.

As if she heard the telepathic transmission, she gave a light shake of her head. The sympathy in her gaze felt like a lifeline too.

Damn, he didn’t know how to love her. Loving his brothers, parents and extended family was very different from beinginlove.

He edged his hand across the tablecloth until his pinky brushed Wren’s.

She glanced up, expression startled. Then she extended her pinky and stroked his in return.

His heart surged. He was pretty sure Lark twisted her head away before he could see her smug smile.

It was far from what he wanted to share with Wren, but he’d bide his time.

He dug into his steak and Wren ate too. Even Avalynn managed to have some salad and bread.

After the server cleared away their empty plates, a big chocolate cake was brought in.

“Four tiers for four decades, my amazing husband!” Dove got out of her seat to video Livingston blowing out the candles while Lexis joked about a bonfire.

Following a thick slice of the decadent treat, Jennings pushed away from the table. He held out a hand to Wren. “Dance with me.”

Her jaw dropped. “You dance?”’

Julius let out a hoot and clapped his hands. “You haven’t seen dancing until you’ve witnessed Jennings kickin’ it up.”

Casting a grin, Jennings clasped Wren by the hand and tugged. “Come and find out.”
