Barbecue from Skinny D’s

He looked up. “You want me to make a run to the grocery store?”

“Yeah. Use the club vehicle. Take care of this for us, would you? It would mean a lot to the prez knowing that you had a hand in his party. He likes to put trust in his new patches.”

Jennings’s veins filled with red-hot anger. The molten flow scorched him.

“Any questions?” Cole eyed him.

“Nope. Easy run.” He held up the paper that he pinched hard enough to crush into pulp. “Won’t take me long.”

Without another word, Cole nodded to him. Jennings walked out. On the way through the club, he glanced to where Bones had been standing. They locked gazes once more.

The hair on his nape prickled.

Game on.

He strode out, aware of footsteps behind him. When he pushed out the door, he braced himself for what came next.

Tossing a glance over his shoulder, he strode in the opposite direction of the car he was supposed to use. In a fast clip, he rounded the corner of the building.

When Bones cleared the corner, Jennings hooked his arm around his neck and threw him to the ground. Bones scrabbled, but Jennings was bigger and stronger.

Using his body weight, he braced his forearm over his throat while fishing in his pocket. He wasn’t searching for the goddamn shopping list—he whipped out a zip-tie and in a swift move, shoved him face down and bound his hands behind his back.

Bones inflated his lungs to let out a bellow, but Jennings cut that off. He clamped his hand on the guy’s neck, compressing the pressure point and knocking him out. His adversary went boneless.

Looking around to make sure no one witnessed what he’d done, he gained his feet and hefted Bones over his shoulder. At the corner, he paused to glance at the parking lot. Seeing that no one was out there, he rushed to the car. The cameras he could deal with by hacking the system through his phone. He dumped Bones on the ground out of sight.

He whipped open the front door and pushed the button to pop the trunk. In seconds, he had Bones loaded in and a nice length of duct tape over his mouth.

After he jumped behind the wheel, he issued a low growl. Goddammit. Stuffing a man in the trunk wasnotpart of the plan. He needed to get rid of him, but he needed to pick up those damn supplies quickly to stay in good graces with the Disciples. Playing this game was getting old, though. He wanted out and Wren safe.

He zoomed through traffic, blew a couple red lights and arrived at the store in minutes. The guy in the trunk wouldn’t rouse for a while longer, so he was confident that he wouldn’t wake up and pound on the trunk to alert someone he was inside.

He took a minute to wipe the footage from the club cameras that surveilled the parking lot and then climbed out.

In the store, Jennings grabbed a shopping cart, mentally gnashing his teeth at the idea of buying food and alcohol for those fuckers at the club. He had more pressing matters to deal with.

He rushed through the aisles, loading the cart with cases of beer. He’d have to swing by the liquor store for vodka, which would give him more time to call Lexis and unload Bones on him.

Glancing at the list, he whipped around the corner and slammed his cart right into another customer’s.

“Damn, sorry—” He broke off as he locked stares with a very familiar set of eyes.

“What the fuck are you doing here?” he hissed at Julius.Fury hit him like a wave. “Don’t answer that—you’re checking up on me. You never had any goddamn faith in my ability.”

Julius had a few items in his cart that looked as random as his brother being in this store in a different town. He stepped closer to Jennings and lowered his voice. “I prefer to think of it as having your back. You’ve been distracted by a certain person.”

He let out a warning growl. “I’ve never been more focused,” he bit off. “I just handed you all those leads. And I’ve got my own back.”

“Not distracted? The old Jennings would have noticed I was here ten minutes ago.”

He inflated his lungs to bursting. His rage turned inward.Dammit.His brother wasn’t wrong.

“I’ve got a lot on my mind.”
