“I’ll have Lark look up the air marshall on that flight and make sure he’s got your six.”

“I could use it. But I don’t expect any issues on the flight. Hell, I don’t even know if it’s a traditional flight. There’s a van of guys meeting us upon arrival. Not sure what the plan really is, but it’s big.”

“We’ll be listening for chatter.”

“I need a favor,” he blurted.

Lexis was silent for a heartbeat. Then he said, “Is it Wren?”

“Yeah. She’s at work. I’m going to pick her up, put in an appearance at the bar.” He hadn’t fully constructed a plan but now it rolled off his tongue as if it’d been in the back of his head all this time.

“Drop us a pin to a rendezvous point and we’ll get her out safe.”

Emotion clogged his throat. “You’ll need to watch out for—”

“We got you,” Lexis cut off his words.

He scrubbed a hand over his face. “I don’t like this.”

“I understand. But let us do this for you—for the team.”

“The team?”

“Lark seems to think that Wren belongs with Sentry.”

That lump in his throat doubled in size. He pinched the bridge of his nose. “She might not be wrong. We can’t fuck this up, Lexis.”

“We won’t. Keep us updated about where to pick her up, and we’ll be there. Then you make goddamn sure you watch your back.”

He couldn’t fail. He had too much to lose, and it was more than the op at this point.

When he ended the call, he focused on the people coming and going from the barbecue joint. He didn’t spot anyone who might report to the Disciples that he pulled off and talked on the phone, so he put his helmet back on and rolled out.

The loop around town to reach the nursing home didn’t take long. His mind was deeply engrossed in what to tell Wren about the situation. And how much was too much. She was savvy, probably more street smart than a lot of people he’d met. But one look at her big eyes invited him to wrap himself around her like a shield.

Wren’s nerves jangled. Ever since Jennings showed up at work and said those things to her, she had been aching to be with him again, to have his arms around her, pulling her close. His lips on hers.

She stood at the nurse’s station, plugging information into the computer for the last patient she’d assisted. Every few words of her report, she glanced down at the clock in the corner of the screen.

Janine appeared at Wren’s side. “Is it just me or is this the longest day ever?”

“It is,” Wren agreed.

“All the days probably feel long to you. You can’t wait to get back to that hot man of yours.” She bumped her shoulder into Wren’s playfully. “Damn, you’re lucky.”

Wren’s fingers stilled on the keys.Lucky.

She’d never looked at her life from that perspective before. After all she had endured following their parents’ deaths, she considered herself a survivor. So what if she didn’t finish medical school? She had training for a decent job that was in high demand.

Though the reason why wasn’t ideal, her dream of her brother getting into rehab had come true. Instead of being trapped with a drug dealer, Jennings swooped in like a hero and rescued her.

She’d found love.

And anamazingsex life.

“Three minutes till this day’s over.” She saved the reporting and closed the patient file. “I’m going to grab my purse and be ready to fly out the door. I’m not taking any chances at being stuck here longer.”
