He brushed his thumb over her delicate finger. One day—soon—he’d put a ring on it.

“What now?” Livingston’s question brought him back to the present.

Turning his head, he locked gazes with Julius. “Get this motherfucker to the cops. Or a hospital. We drop Wren with the other women. I have to get on that plane for El Paso. Problem is, I missed the food drop-off and ran out of the bar. The Disciples will know something’s wrong.”

Julius eyed him. “What’s the plan?”

“I make excuses. Say I realized the woman was an imposter and I took care of her.”

Wren gave a small squeak.

He sent her a soft look of apology.

Julius grabbed his phone and brought it to his ear. “Lexis. We’re dropping a criminal at the hospital. He’s bleeding but not in danger of dying—yet. Yeah, get the cops to meet us. Where are the women right now?”

He listened for a moment and then ended the call in a few short words and grunts.

When he put the phone away, he nudged the unconscious man. “He’s taking up most of the seat.”

“Why do you think I put the last guy in the trunk?”

Wren whipped around. “What? You put a man in the trunk, Jennings?”

Livingston gulped back a laugh.

Wren’s gaze fixed on Jennings. “Who did you put in the trunk?”

“It’s not important. I’m doing my job.”

Her face crumpled. “You can’t get on that plane. It’s dangerous. When we were in the bar, those guys recognized me. They know you killed the drug dealer.”

He shrugged. “I’ll say it was a crime of passion. I wanted you—I took you. Simple as that.”

She shuddered. “Even if they buy that story, you’re going to be with the vice president of the Disciples. They don’t mess around, Jennings. If they find out who you are, they’ll kill you.”

“I’ve known that since I started this op. To stay in my role, I have to get on that plane. Trust me, baby. I know what I’m doing. There’s no way out of this now.”

He wanted to tell her how much he loved her. That his feelings were bone-deep. But now wasn’t the time for sweet confessions. He’d save that for when she was naked in his arms.

He reached out and stroked a fingertip down to the point of her delicate chin. “You’ll be safe in lockdown with the rest of the Sentry wives.”

She opened her mouth to protest, but whatever she read on his face made her jaws snap shut. She twisted forward again.

“Abel, you’re live. We got you on the map.”

Jennings didn’t respond to Lexis’s statement. Any outward acknowledgement would be a red flag to Cole. He’d managed to blend in for this long. He was confident that he could keep flying under the radar.

He’d lost the listening device in the church when it blew up. But the communication device in his ear was equally small and would go unnoticed. And when he climbed into the van with Cole, Jennings didn’t pick up on any tension.

They didn’t head to the main terminal of the airport. Instead, they circled to another gate where they accepted shipments. A cargo plane sat at the ready.

Giving no indication that this was odd, Jennings followed Cole’s lead and moved from the van to the tarmac. Cole climbed a set of metal folding stairs into the aircraft. As Jennings trailed behind, he ducked his head under the doorframe.

As soon as he entered the plane, he noted the motorcycles. Twenty in total, without their tires, all strapped to the plane walls to hold them in place.

Cole was staring at him.
