“What time is it?”

“Five-thirty in the afternoon. You were a sleepy baby.”

It wasn’t unusual for me to sleep so late when I’d worked at the bar the night before. It was unusual for me to sleep so deeply, though.I guess being kidnapped from your best friend's house in the middle of the night did make you extra tired.

“Shit!” I scrambled to get out of the bed. “I forgot to cancel my date with Emerson.”

I dug through my backpack, searching for my phone. “I feel so bad. I should have reached out earlier. He’s going to think I’m a bitch.”

Pike’s large hands settled over my frantic ones. “I charged your phone earlier. I also talked to Emerson around lunch today. I didn’t want you to feel at fault or to try and take the blame for canceling the date. I got his number from Elliot and communicated with him man-to-man. It’s all settled, okay?”

“You did?” I asked as I sat down on the floor.

“I did. Everything’s okay.”

"Were you nice?" My question caused him to laugh.

"I used my best manners."

“Was he upset?”

Pike pulled on one of my loose curls. “No, baby, he wished us well. He really does seem like a nice guy.”

I smiled up at him. “Thank you, Pike.”

“I’ll always take care of you, Bitty.” He scooped me up from the floor and set me on his hip. “What do you say I take my best girl out for dinner before I go to the club?”

“Aren’t you supposed to be there in an hour? Do we have enough time?”

“I have all the time in the world for you, Bitty.”

Chapter 5

Pike

“Can I have a waffle?”

“That sounds yummy. How about a waffle and a fruit bowl?”

“Okay,” she agreed.

“Mhhh, try again.”

She blushed beautifully as she looked around.

I used the arm I had wrapped around her to pull her closer. “Nobody’s paying attention, Bitty. I would never embarrass you like that.”

She smiled at me. “Okay, Sir.”

“What do you want to drink?” I asked.

“Coffee.”

“How about juice?”

“A coffee, please.”

“Juice, milk, or water, Bitty.”
