“If it’s too much trouble, just go home. Honestly, I can walk.” He tugged a toque out of his pocket and slammed it onto his head. The utter defiance almost made me giggle. Almost.

“Whatever.” She stalked to the door.

“Oh, hey, Bea,” he called out over the few people mingling nearby. The sauciness in his voice vanished into the air. “Are you waiting for me? Or am I walking?”

“Of course, I’ll wait.” With that, the bells jingled once more, and she stepped outside.

He shook his head. “I’d apologise for her, but sadly, you know what she’s like.”

As much as I wanted to focus on him, I stared at the door, positive she was standing out in the cold watching us through the window.

“Back to my earlier question.” His voice was so soft and sweet, it pulled me right back to look up into his face.

“And that would be?” I still had questions of my own, so I didn’t remember what his original question had been.

“So, you’ve moved here? Where are you staying?” He stared deep into my eyes, so much curiosity hidden in the depths.

“Motor Inn on Alpine Way.”

He scrunched his face together. “That’s not the best part of town and not the greatest place to stay.”

I playfully punched his arm. “Well, they have a charger for Casper.” A confused look briefly crossed his face. “The Batmobile?”

A solid head bop happened. “Ah, yes. Your friendly ghost.”

“Plus, they rent the rooms out by the week—”

“Eww… that can’t be sanitary.”

I shrugged. “It’s not by the hour and besides, it seems clean.”

He leaned closer and whispered in my ear. “Wash all the dishes before you eat off them.”

Wanting to shrug off the suggestion, I instead nodded, somewhat worried about why the heads up on the dishes. “It’s temporary since I’m not sure how long I’ll be here…”

“Why not?”

“Depends on a few things, I suppose.” I squared my shoulders and readied myself for his response. Aside from the fact I only had five weeks of a job ahead of me…

“Like what?” His head tipped curiously to the side, and he widened his stance.

“Well, if I’m being honest, you.” My breath froze as I waited for him to say something. Anything.

My heart beat faster as my lungs burned until he finally spoke. “That puts a lot of pressure on a guy like me.”

“Well… yes… I guess it does.” But I wasn’t sorry. Not yet.

A broad smile appeared, curving his lips gently upward. “A challenge I can most definitely step up for, right?”

“Game on then?”

“Game on.”

From the corner of my eye, I spotted Stanley hovering. “I need to go.”

“Guess I’ll be seeing you around.”

“Saturday night for sure, and who knows, maybe even before that?”
