“I have no doubt, even though you haven’t shown me anything since that drawing.”

“Oh, that has been scrapped.” Ophelia’s laugh was contagious. Even through the phone, it brought a smile to my face. “Just you wait until what I have to show you.”

“I can’t wait to see. Should I open the boxes or…”

“I’d rather you not. I don’t need husky fur all over them.”

“Good point.” I closed the box, hiding the orange fabric. “I’ll put them in the guest room. Niko doesn’t go in there.”

“I’ll be having the guest room, right? I mean, you make Milo sleep on the couch.”

“Milo’s been sleeping with me, actually,” I said before I could stop myself. Once the words left my lips, I instantly regretted them. “I mean…”

“He’s. Been. Sleeping. With. You?” Ophelia repeated, each word coming slow and steady, her southern drawl lingering on a few words.

“Well…”Keep it together, Madeline…“Yes…in my bed.”

“But you’ve slept together?”

I blushed. Even though Ophelia couldn’t see my facial reaction, she could definitely read my mind through the phone. Memories of his hands trailing up the sides of my body, slipping into places that felt, oh, so good…I bit my lip.

“You’ve slept together!” Ophelia screeched.

“It’s not a big deal…” I mumbled.

“Oh, yes, it is. First, the man takes you on a week vacation with his daughter, and then you have sex with him.”

“I wouldn’t call that sex,” I said under my breath.

“Oh, what? Just a casual hook up then?”

“No, Ophelia. With Milo, it was…” I fell on my couch, heat returning to my body just thinking about Milo, wishing he were here with me. “It wasn’t like any man I’ve been with before. He asked what I wanted, and he made sure I was happy. He was soft and gentle, yet powerful at the same time. It was a completely new experience, and I couldn’t get enough. It wasn’t just sex. I’m pretty sure what we had was the definition of making love.”And I couldn't wait to make more.“I may say it wasn’t a big deal, but Ophelia…it was everything.”

Ophelia hummed. “Everything, huh?”

“Have you even heard me talk about sex like this before? I’m pretty sure the answer is no.”

“Sweetie, I had to give you advice when you first started sleeping with Kent, remember?”

“Kent was…” I shook my head. “...not this. And to think I was hoping he was going to propose.” I made a disgusted face. Trying to imagine being engaged to Kent right now took away all the warm fuzzy feelings I had. “You also had to give me pointers in college,” I changed the subject.

“Yea, and we see how that worked out.” Ophelia chuckled. “I haven't had a good night with a guy since…” She paused, the subject leaning back toward Clay—I could tell.

I took a sharp inhale. “Your flight is in five days. Are you excited?”

If only Clay knew she was still hung up on him. Things may change there.

“Thanks and yes.” Ophelia’s voice freed of the tension. “I can’t wait to get home, even if it will be a busy weekend.”

Ophelia’s mood changed instantly, telling me more about what was happening and confirming for the millionth time that I was going to be helping her on show day. I had already gotten that day off from work and was prepped and ready to follow Ophelia’s orders. Her voice buzzed through my ears as she went from best friend to businesswoman, my mind trying to keep track of all the small details she was giving me, the boxes in the corner of my eye.

She ended the call, telling me she’d keep me updated and that afewmore boxes were coming. I began to trudge each box up the stairs to the guest room, snapping a photo of the boxes before shutting the door, making sure Niko didn’t even think about going in there.

I sent the photo of all the boxes to Milo with a laughing emoji.

Madeline: The things I do for Ophelia.

The week dragged on. After the week in Depoe Bay, I was hoping to be refreshed and ready for work. Instead, I was busier and more stressed than before. My patient load had doubled, taking up another hygiene room to fill in the spots from the week I missed. Thank God for Jamie, or I would have lost my mind a long time ago. She made sure everything was there and ready for me with every patient, thankfully keeping my head on straight.
