I raise a hand to my temple. It’s throbbing from overanalysing, and my mind needs a break.

“Are you okay?” Braxton asks watching my movement. “Perhaps we should go. I’ll walk you home,” he offers.

A lone butterfly hovers, then flutters beside me the entire journey home. It gives me a sense of comfort and, strangely, my headache disappears.

Chapter13

Siriarna

There is no physical damage to be seen. Our Propensity classroom has been completely cleaned, banishing any evidence of broken glass. I wish I could just as easily scrub the memory from my mind, however, there seems to be no hint of unrest from the other group members. At least that is some small consolation.

Letting out a deep-seated sigh as I sink into my self-designated chair at the back of the classroom, I try to focus on my breathing in the hope of mentally relaxing.

Simeon storms through the doorway, snapping my attention away from my breathing exercises. He strides purposefully to the front of the classroom where he then unravels a scroll. Clearing his throat dramatically he begins to read, announcing the much-anticipated third quarter Challenge to the class.

“Upon the 100thmoment on the 7th day;

The annual Challenge comes your way;

Teams of two should follow each clue;

But take your time to think them through;

Work together, find the guise;

Use your skills, and partner wise;

This will be your ultimate test;

And lead to this year’s true and best.”

This is exactly the distraction I needed. Although, I can’t help but wonder if my magic will behave.

Excited chatter fills the room. The others seem to forget my exile and include me in their conversations.

“Isn’t this the most exciting thing to happen?” says Astrid with glee.

Frasier’s face spreads into a widened grin, “I’m pretty pumped. It won’t be long until we graduate and become Second Years.”

“Do you think we can partner with anyone from any Propensity? The riddle is kind of vague,” adds in Eloise.

“We only have five members, and it says, “partner wise,” so I’m guessing we can, or else there will be one person from our Prop going solo,” I cautiously join in.

“Ooh, that’s a great point, Siriarna. I think you might be right,” Astrid nods her head in agreement.

“We are stronger together. I think you and I should work together, Astrid,” suggests Eloise.

“Yes, I agree with Eloise. Let’s pair up Frasier,” remarks Mykos.

Now, with my four peers paired up, I am once again, the odd one out.

“Sorry, Siriarna. I’m not trying to be mean. I am just more connected with Astrid,” says Eloise.

“Don’t worry about it,” I respond casually.

It does leave the question of who I should partner with. Or more to the point, who would want to partner with me. Normally, Roman would be my go-to but with Alexandraya in the picture, that rules him out. My mind wanders to Braxton.

“Right, all. There is still work to be done. Take your seats,” Simeon interrupts the banter.
