Siriarna

Roman is the last student to showcase. He confidently strolls to each station and performs with such direct ease. All the students are watching him from their tents with piqued interest, a courtesy not afforded to myself. He finishes his round with his favourite skill, Light. The colours he conjures are magnificent, not the average range but an assortment of shades, bright andshimmering. The crowd erupts in cheer and all flags are risen. It is no surprise he walks directly into the Light tent. Straight into Alexandraya’s arms—now that was a surprise I didn’t see coming, and one I do not like. Not one tiny bit.It suddenly makes sense why she chose the Light Propensity. Jealousy flicks around my stomach, and I try my best to quash it.

High Power Omnisensus moves to the top of the tower located in the middle of the Propensity tents. His voice echoes around the arena. “Congratulations to everyone selected today. I am proud of you all.”

This was supposed to be a moment of glory, but I’m not listening. I’m thinking about Roman.

Why he is suddenly so into Alexandraya? He has always agreed with me that she is way too self-absorbed, even for a semi god.

“It is time for you to embrace your Propensity and celebrate your impending future,” continues the Authority.

In the centre of each Propensity tent, small cylindrical vials are spread across a table. Each vial contains a liquid.

“Drink,” he proclaims.

Along with all students, I take a vial and guzzle the contents in one sip. Spell casting index fingers are now stained with the colour pertaining to an individual’s Propensity. Mine is purple. Group Leaders hand around new uniforms, coloured in Propensity, to replace our former white training uniform.

“The anointment is complete. Let the celebration commence,” beams High Power Omnisensus.

Goddess Iris shoots through the air on her chariot throwing a rainbow over the skies of Evolirium. The sound of cheering fills the Zen as the enormity of today’s selections sink in. I silently thank the Fates.

Finally, my wishes have been answered.

Now in a celebratory mood, I scan the Light Propensity tentin search of Roman. My gaze finds instead Alexandraya, who has a huge smile plastered across her face. Upon closer inspection, I see her hand in Roman’s.They’re holding hands.

Simeon, the Electrical Group Leader, approaches and somehow I manage to pull myself together. “That was some display out there Siriarna.”

“Um, thanks.”

“You don’t realise what you just did, do you?”

“I lit a bulb.”

A deep throaty chuckle escapes his lips. “Yes Siriarna, you lit the bulb. What you don’t realise is that you did it through thought, not with a chant or spell. No one else saw. It was so quick, I only just caught it myself. You must not speak of this to anyone…yet. Do you understand?”

“Okay.” I reply grateful to be in this Propensity, regardless of how I got here.

Chapter6

Siriarna

I wake before dawn, stretch out my body and grin, the significance of my Propensity achievement still fresh. After changing into my new purple uniform, I dance around my hut humming before collapsing onto my couch laughing. Catching my breath, I think about the other students. Will they like me?

To make sure there’s no awkward entrances, I arrive at our meeting point early. Not long after, I hear distant chatter approaching as my new group members appear. Some of us have had classes together in the past, but there are two members who I have not worked with before—Eloise and Mykos. The banter is easy-going and friendly—a glimmer of optimism washes over me.

Leader Simeon arrives and shepherds us to our new classroom. “Team, this will be your permanent fixture for the next year. You are about to embark upon the first of the designated six year Propensity training. At its conclusion, you will have a choice to make. Whilst I know it’s quite some time away, you might want to start considering your futures. With hard work, some of you may even become members of The Core.”

“That’s my life goal,” Mykos blurts out. His thickset body and near-black eyes animate when he speaks.

“I dream about being a part of that group,” Eloise says enchanted.

For me, thinking about The Core makes my pulse quicken. An elite amalgamated Propensity group who tackle intricate missions and liaise directly with the gods; it’s a semi god’s highest achievement. A most coveted and highly competitive position.

Could this really be my future? Stefanie would be ridiculously proud. I shudder at the thought of future masquerade parties if I did make The Core.

Simeon cuts into my daydream, “Today, we start with the theory of Electricity.”
