He raises a brow, and the expression strikes me as odd. “Did I look at the works of one of the most prolific writers in American literature?”

Sarcasm. He’s being sarcastic, and the thought takes me so off guard I have no response.

“Of course I did,” he says obviously.

A nervous laugh spills out of me.

He reaches up to brush my hair back from my neck. “But if you’re referencing the notes written in it by a past victor, I did also see that.” He cups his palm around the side of my neck, thumb tracing my jaw. “I figured that’s why it was safeguarded beneath your pillow.” When he pulls away, I’m left wondering if it was something he approves of or disapproves of me having. “Your clothes are in the closet, though.”

When he returns to the closet, I follow. “What happened to me being separated?”

Laurence unbuttons his shirt as he answers. “No more of the communal cabin in the woods. You stay with me.”

“I thought only the top Players got to stay with their Advocates.”

He gives me a puzzled look. “What makes you think you’re not a top Player after today?”

“Good point.” I clutch the book behind my back and lean against the doorframe as Laurence discards his shirt and dons a new one. “Are you going somewhere?”

His eyes roam over me, reminding me I’m still naked. “Yes.”

“Where?”

Laurence sighs. “Always so inquisitive.”

I shrug. “Curiosity is human nature.”

He searches my face, his observational expressions always stirring something deep within me. “That it is.” Finishing up changing his clothes, he stops in front of me. “I’ll be back this evening in time for the gala. A team will arrive in a few hours to help you get ready. As one of today’s top Players, you’ll want to make an impression.”

“Is this all part of you helping me win?”

Laurence brushes his knuckles across my collar bone, trailing his touch down to the side of my breast as he appears lost in thought. “Everything I do is to help you win.”

“Why are you so invested in me winning?”

He drops his hand. I wish it would return. “Because from the moment I laid eyes on you, I knew you were going to be the victor. I want to be a part of that journey. I want to be a part ofyou.”

Even though his words bring that stirring warmth deep in my core, I still shake my head. “We barely know each other Laurence. It makes no sense.”

“It’s just the games, Blue,” he says in a low voice.

“We haven’t even fucked.”

Laurence cocks his head to the side. “No?” He slides his fingers over my curves until they’re between my legs. It’s quickly becoming my favorite place for him to be. He caresses my clit in lazy circles until I’m wet and aching for him. He grabs the back of my neck with his free hand and I crane it look up at him. “Is this not enough?” He tears my hands from each other and the book falls to the floor with a dullthud. Guiding my hand to his cock, he says, “Or do you need this, too? You don’t seem to be eager to have it.”

“Like I said, we barely know each other,” I whisper. “I’m not sure I can trust you.” But I struggle through the words as his fingers slide inside me again.

“So let’s get acquainted.” Laurence bends down to my neck and kisses along my throat, grazing his lips across my jaw until his lips hover over mine. “What do you want to know?”

With every option open, I have no idea what to ask. It makes it even harder to focus while he fingers me. I stick with something simple. “What do you do for work?”

Laurence continues to stroke my insides as he answers against my lips. “I own a tech company that I started on my ownwith my partner. I make a lot of money, and I enjoy spending it and sharing it. It’s what brought me here. To you.”

I moan at his continued touch, leaning my head back. With my eyes closed, I ask, words breathy, “I still don’t understand why you find me so special.”

Laurence places a hand on my face, bringing my eyes open again. “You came here for a reason, correct?”

“Yes,” I breathe. “To win. To walk with money.”
