It felt like they were really getting to know each other. He loved getting glimpses of her Little. She was precious, and she called to him in a way no woman ever had.She was his.He knew it.He had to move at her pace because she was still scared. He wanted to hunt down her ex and teach him a lesson. How someone could ever hurt that sweet woman was beyond him.The guy was a coward, that was for sure.

“Hey, man.”

Doc looked up from the medical book he was reading and nodded.“Hey, King. What’s up, man?”

King was not only a firefighter but also belonged to the MC, so the two men spent a lot of time together.

“Ready to knock off work and go have a beer. It’s been a busy few days.Lots of calls.”

Therehadbeen a lot of calls lately. It seemed like it went in waves.Sometimes were slower than others.Being so busy had been a good thing for Doc.Otherwise, he would have been texting or calling Harper way more than he already had been.He hoped he wasn’t being too clingy, but he couldn’t seem to help it.His mind was almost always on her, but when he was treating a patient, he was focused on doing everything he could to save them.

Before Doc could answer, the alarm went off.Another call.

“Fire on Grand Avenue and Sixth Street.Grand Avenue Commons apartments,” the announcement over the loudspeaker said.

His entire body tensed. Those were Harper’s apartments. Both men sprang into action, running for the fire truck and ambulance.

“That’s where Harper lives,” Doc yelled at King.

Even though King hadn’t been at the clubhouse when Harper had come for the girls’ book club, he’d heard all about her from the guys.Meddling assholes.

King nodded and jumped into the truck along with several other firefighters.Doc leaped into the driver’s seat of the ambulance, and at the same time, his partner, Ethan, hopped into the passenger seat.

Doc held his phone out to Ethan.“I need you to find Harper in my contacts and try to call her. It’s her apartment complex we’re going to.”

“No answer,” Ethan announced a few seconds later.

“Fuck!”

Adrenaline pumped through his veins as he sped through town toward Grand Avenue. It was late and dark, and he couldn’t imagine how scared Harper was.Was she hurt?Burned? His stomach rolled at the thought.

Every second that passed was torture. The firetruck pulled into the parking lot first, with Doc right behind.Even though it was a complex, the apartments were set up as tiny duplexes, and from what he could tell, only one of the buildings was on fire.

“Go find her.I’ll see if we have any injuries,” Ethan said.

Doc jumped out and ran toward the scene.A group of people crowded together watching the fire.He searched for one face in particular, and when his gaze landed on it, he let out a whoosh of breath.

“Harper!”he yelled.

She was shivering. He rushed for her, and she flew into his arms.

“Shh.I’m here.You’re safe, baby.”

“It’s my building on fire,” she cried, her body going limp in his arms.

Fuck.

“Okay. You got out safe, and that’s the most important thing.I’m so proud of you for getting out of there,” he told her.

She was wearing only a nightie that fell to her knees and she didn’t have shoes on.

Ethan jogged over to him.“No injuries. Why don’t you put her in the back of the ambo so she can warm up.”

Doc nodded and lifted her in his arms. She clung to him and buried her face in the crook of his neck. She smelled like smoke, and he wondered how long she’d breathed it in before she got out of there.

“Sit on the stretcher, baby. Here’s a blanket.”

He fussed over her for the next few minutes, covering her with several blankets, and then used a wet cloth to wipe the soot from her face. When she started coughing, he grabbed his stethoscope.
