“Yes, please?”

“Sweetheart, I just don’t know if it’s a good idea for me to move in with you when we’ve only known each other for three fucking weeks.”

“You just said you were thinking about moving in with a total stranger.”

“But I’m notfuckingthat guy!”

“I’m very glad to hear it.”

I gave him a look. “Alastair, I can’t move in with you.”

“Why not? It’s close to where you work.”

“Yeah, but…what if it wrecks everything?”

His eyebrows pulled together. “What do you mean?”

I blinked. Was he seriously this dense?

“If we’re living together, you’re going to see me at my worst,” I said.

“Bring it the fuck on.”

I tried to stay angry, but it was impossible not to laugh. “You have no idea what you’ve started.”

He smiled, like he wassuperhappy about what he’d started.

“I’m going to seeyouatyourworst, too,” I pointed out.

“Well,” Alastair said, sitting straighter and grinning with glee, “I am an absolute joy, so there’s nothing to worry about.”

My smile widened, but the relief I felt didn’t completely erase the fact that this was probably a stupid idea.

“This is the stupidest idea,” I said, staring into his eyes and grinning like a fool.

“Maybe…maybe not,” he said, covering my hand where it lay on the table with his own. “Let’s find out.”

I thought Esther would be happy when I told her about our plan.

“What the fuck, Toby? You don’t have to move in with Alastair! You can stay here for as long as you need to.”

“I know I don’t have to move in with him, Esther. But I want to.”

Esther was in the kitchen making Kraft macaroni and cheese, and I was sitting on the sofa that I’d used for a bed for the past few weeks.

She gave me a steady look, to assess whether or not I’d lost my goddamned mind. “Have you lost your goddamned mind?”

“Look… It makes sense. It was his idea.”

“But it’s too early! Are you sure you want to risk your relationship with Alastair by moving in together?”

“What other choice do I have? You know what rent is in this city. Alastair said I could have the room for a couple of hundred a month. That’s a huge savings. And he lives in Old Ottawa South, for fuck’s sake.”

“But you can stay here until you find a place, Toby.”

“I’m not staying on your couch anymore. It’s too much of a disruption for you, and it’s not much fun forme.”
