"I don't know about the beautiful part, but I was wild and reckless.I felt so restricted in my father's house.I wanted to be free.I felt very rebellious in my later teenage years."

"I can understand that. The summer I spent with Grandpa and Grandma was the coldest summer of my life. She tried to make it okay, but he didn't want me around."

"He hurt you and I'm sorry for that."

"You can apologize for the things you did, but not the things he did."She paused."Thanks for trying to save me tonight. You didn't have to come up those stairs.I'm sure Nick told you not to."

"He ordered me to leave, but unless he was going to shoot me, I was going to get to you.I would rather die than watch you be hurt, Isabella.I know you probably don't believe that. You think I abandoned you a long time ago.I made some huge mistakes and got caught up in Gary's life, and it was bad for you...all of it."

"Thanks for acknowledging that."

"I want you to be happy.I want you to have your dreams. These last few years, I thought it would be better for you if I stayed away. But I've missed you a lot.I've read everything you've ever written."

"You have?"she asked in amazement.

"You're a good writer and so smart. You didn't get that from me."

"I might have gotten some of it.You did figure out where the paintings were."

"Well, art might be my one strength."She paused."What did you tell the police?"

"Nothing.I said the word over and over and over again. It was so difficult.I wanted to tell them everything Stefano did, but Nick's voice was ringing in my head."

"And you trust him?"

"More than I've ever trusted anyone."

"I think he's in love with you, Isabella."

She shook her head."I don't know.I don't think so.It's too fast.Too soon.There's a lot going on."

Her mother smiled."And by that very long denial, I think maybe you're falling for him, too."

"Maybe a little," she reluctantly admitted.

A female officer suddenly appeared at the door."Venga con me," she said as she waved them out of the cell.

They were escorted into a conference room bigger than the interrogation room she'd left a short time earlier, but now Nick and Captain Lavezzo were seated at the table along with Commissario Toran.

Nick gave her a reassuring smile as they sat down.

"We have a lot to talk about," Captain Lavezzo said, taking the lead, his face determined and purposeful.

She shot Nick a questioning look."Are we talking?"

"Yes," he replied."I filled Captain Lavezzo in on everything we know."

"Everything?Was that wise?"

"It was," Lavezzo interjected."I learned that Catherine Vigonas was involved in the museum robbery on Sunday. She wanted to barter information for protection. She wouldn't name the person in charge unless we came to an agreement.Unfortunately, before that could happen, she was killed."

"Is that what you were talking about at the party?I saw you in the garden, but I couldn't understand what you were saying."

"Yes," he said."I didn't realize anyone had seen us."

"It felt like you had a personal relationship with Catherine. She was upset, and you were trying to calm her down."She gave him a challenging look."Am I wrong?"

He gazed back at her, his dark eyes unreadable, but then he said, "I met Catherine about eight years ago.She was working at another museum then, and there was a robbery. She helped me find the thieves. They were not related to this case," he added quickly."We became friends. That's all, just friends."
