"No.She mentioned a boy she'd loved when she was young, but I don't know if it was him.Although, he said he was her best friend, so if it wasn't him, then he probably knew who it was."

"Maybe you could ask your mother."

She immediately shook her head."My mother isn't relevant to this situation.I don't need to talk to her."

"Isn't relevant?"he challenged."She's Gloria's daughter.Why isn't she here if she's living in Florence?"

"My mother isn't the person you call in a crisis. That's why she's not here, and we don't need to involve her in anything."She let out a breath."My grandmother said that I can have the attic room.I'm going to unpack before dinner."

"What's the deal with you and your mom?"he asked curiously.

"It's not your business."

"Do you ever answer a question?"

"You had plenty of time to ask me questions when we went to dinner, but you weren't interested then, and I'm not interested in answering now."

"I had a lot on my mind that night, but I was rude to you, Isabella, and I'm sorry about that. However, you have to admit you were hating on me the second I sat down."

"Because you were thirty minutes late, and I'd spent a solid half hour enduring looks of pity and questions about whether my date was going to show up.When you arrived, you didn't even apologize."

"I'm sure I said I was sorry."

"Your exact words were 'I thought we were getting a table outside.'But I couldn't get a table on the patio unless you were there, so I had to stay inside."

"Are you sure I didn't say sorry first?"

"Absolutely one-hundred-percent positive."

"Your memory might be blurry. You'd had a fair amount to drink before I got there."

"Because I was waiting so long," she said with extreme annoyance and also some guilt that she had drunk too much during that painful half hour."I had a lot on my mind, too.But I stuck it out. You're the one who ultimately bailed on me without a word.I've been ghosted before, but not while the date was actually going on."

"I had a work emergency."

"So you said.I'm sure there wouldn't have been an emergency if you wanted to be on the date. You shouldn't have invited me to dinner if you didn't want to go."

"My grandmother wanted us to meet."

"So what? You either do it with enthusiasm or don't do it at all."

He gave her a thoughtful look."Were you enthusiastic?I don't remember seeing even one smile on your face."

"Because you were late."

"You really have a problem with people being late," he said dryly.

"I have a problem with people who think their time is more important than mine."She waved her hand in the air."And this conversation is going nowhere. You will never admit you were wrong."

"I will."

"Not with any genuine feeling."

"I was wrong, Isabella.I should have cancelled the date because there were too many things going on, and I wasn't able to get there on time or to stay, and I couldn't explain why. That wasn't fair to you."

She stared at him in amazement, shocked he had actually apologized, and that he sounded sincere."Okay," she said finally.

"Just okay?"
