"Do you find everything to be a joke?"

"Life is easier when you don't take it too seriously."

"Some things in life are serious."

"Now you sound like my son.Flynn used to laugh so much when he was a kid.It didn't take much to make that happen. He had a joyous personality.Little things made him happy."

"I doubt he was joyous or happy when he lost his father."

Even in the shadows of where they were standing, Sam's expression darkened."That was a sad time for me, too."

"It was your choice to leave, not his.At least, that's the way I heard it."

"That's the way it happened. But life is more complicated than one decision. He was better off in the long run that I was gone."

"And you were better off being a free man.Don’t you ever get tired of running?"He couldn't imagine how Sam could exist for so many years pretending to be someone else, always staying on the run, looking over his shoulder. He only did it for weeks or months at a time, and that could feel too long.

"It doesn't matter if I'm tired; it's the path I chose. My only regret is losing my son.But I'm glad he's happy, that he doesn't have the burden of my sins hanging over him."

"I wouldn't go that far.Flynn said after you disappeared the last time, he got a lot of scrutiny from the higher-ups, wondering if he let you go."

"I didn't give him the choice to let me go, but it sounds like the scrutiny went away.He still has his job, leads his team, rights the world's wrongs."

"He's a great leader, agent, and an even better friend."

"I'm not going to ask you to tell him I said hello."

"Good, because I don't think he wants to hear from you."

"I know."Sam took a long draw on his cigarette.

"Why did you agree to meet with me?"he asked."Why did you send me here?"

"You're his friend.I can't help him, but I can help you."

"You haven't been all that helpful so far."

"You're here, aren't you? This is where everyone is.It's up to you to figure out who can help you."He paused."Where is your beautiful friend?"

"I'm actually looking for Isabella.Have you seen her?"

"I have not, but you should keep an eye on her. She's fiery and brave, but sometimes that can draw too much attention. When someone sees a fire, they want to put it out."

Sam's words sent a shiver down his spine, and he wanted to rush toward the house in case Sam knew something he didn't.But Isabella was okay. She could handle herself. She was just working the party. And now that he had Sam, he didn't want to waste the opportunity to get more information.

"Is there something you didn't tell me last night that you want to share more?"

Sam smiled."What's the fun in the game if you don't figure things out for yourself?"

"It's not a game to me, Sam.But if it is to you, why don't you give me a hint?"

Sam cocked his head to the right as he considered the question."You wanted to know more about the Falconeri family."

"Who are apparently all dead."

"Perhaps not."

He raised a brow."Explain."
