"How many identities do you have?"

"On me?"

"Let's start there."

"Two.Bill Jamison and myself."

"You have two passports?"

He nodded."Yes.Hopefully, using that identity will keep anyone from tracking us.But I need more than another ID," he murmured."I need a weapon."

"You didn't come over with one?"

He shook his head."Italy has strict rules about bringing guns into the country, even if you're in law enforcement.I would have had to go through a lot of red tape, and there wasn't time for that.I'll see if Flynn can help me out with a local contact."

"I thought we weren't using our phones."

"My computer has an encrypted text app," he replied.

While he did that, she picked up the hotel phone and called room service, probably ordering way too much food, but she was suddenly starving. When that was done, she headed into the bathroom to take a shower or maybe a bath, she thought, when she saw the large tub.She needed to relax and get her head together.

When Isabella closed the door to the bathroom, Nick called Flynn through his video app.It was past eight o'clock in the morning in LA, and Flynn answered almost immediately, but he was not in the office. He was outside on what appeared to be a running path.

"Did I catch you at a bad time?"he asked.

"No.I'm just doing my cooldown. What did you think of my email?"

"Great work. Now, I need another favor.I need a gun."He gave Flynn a quick wrap-up on what had happened, both to Catherine at the party and to them on the road."I have to be better prepared for next time, because there will be another time.I can't split up from Isabella now, either. We've been together since I arrived in Rome. They know who she is.I need to keep her close so I can protect her."

"You could come back to the States, both of you."

"I can't do that yet.I know what the risks are, Flynn. What I'm doing is not sanctioned by the FBI.As far as you know, I'm just on vacation. If I get into trouble, it will be on me.If I lose my job because of this, then that's what happens. This is my family. And since someone just tried to kill me, I'm even more determined to find them."

"I understand.I'll see if I can hook you up with a local contact who doesn't work for the bureau.Anything else you need?"

"That's good for now."He didn't mention he'd spoken to Flynn's father, and Flynn didn't ask.

"Good luck, Nick.Take care of yourself.I need you on my team."

"I plan to be back on your team as soon as possible."Despite his words, as he clicked out of the chat, he felt very far away from his life as a member of Flynn's team.It had only been a few days, but it felt like years since he'd been doing his job, being someone else, living a fake life.

The word fake reminded him that he and his great-grandfather might have that in common. But even if Tomas had cut corners in life, he knew his grandfather, Marcus, had not.And he believed now more than ever that Marcus had been killed because he was trying to right a wrong from the past that probably had to do with Tomas and Lucinda, because he'd had the info on Juliette in his file.Or he was just trying to get to the truth.

A truth that might kill him and Isabella, too, if they weren't careful…maybe even if they were careful.

The food arrived just after Isabella left the bathroom, looking much less pale.He needed a shower, too, but he was more interested in eating.

They sat down at the table and instead of each picking a dish, they shared everything. He tried a salmon filet first while Isabella went for the pasta. But they didn't stay with their first choices, sometimes laughing, as they both went for the same dish or the same bite, and he was feeling better by the minute.

When they'd finished eating, Isabella got up and stretched out on the nearest bed."Now I'm full and exhausted. Is it okay if I take this bed?"

"Of course," he said, wishing he could share it with her. He'd enjoyed having her fall asleep on his shoulder when they were on the train. He liked keeping her close.

"I finally feel more relaxed," she said."We're safe here, right?"

"I believe so."

"You could have just given me an emphatic yes."
