“Someone came in here while Thatch and I were in the studio,” Lyric said impatiently. “We heard a crash and came running, but by the time we got out here, the personhad taken off, leaving the safe on the ground and the front door wide open.”

“Nothing’s missing from the safe,” Kyra announced. “I counted earlier. All the money is still here.”

“I’m sure they didn’t have enough time to take anything.” Lyric sat on the small love seat. “We ran out here as quick as we could.”

“You were in the studio?” Natalie focused on Thatch. “Doing what? Yoga?” She laughed.

He didn’t take offense. If someone had told him even a year ago he’d be doing yoga, he would’ve laughed too.

“Yes,” Lyric said with a huff. “We were doing yoga.”

“But you didn’t hear the front door open when the person came in?” The police chief had her interrogation face on. Thatch had seen the same expression once before when she’d busted him for speeding.

“We had music on,” he explained in a neutral tone. Well, he tried for neutral anyway.

Color seeped into Lyric’s cheeks.

“What kind of music?” Kyra asked with a snicker.

“Oh, my God.” Natalie gaped at them. “Are you twodating?”

Busted. Thatch hung back and let Lyric take the lead on answering. He still wasn’t quite sure what they were doing.

“We are, as a matter of fact.” Lyric stubbornly lifted her chin, but she was still blushing.

“That’s fun!” Natalie leaned over the reception counter and glanced at Kyra. “How did I miss this news?”

Thatch had no idea how she’d missed the news when most of the town knew.

“Um, maybe we should focus on finding the person who broke in?” Lyric interrupted before Kyra answered.

“Sure.” The chief didn’t lose the smile, though. “Well, nothing’s missing. And the door wasn’t locked, so maybe someone came in looking for one of you and accidentally knocked the safe off the shelf.”

Lyric gritted her teeth. “If they had been looking for us, they would’ve come into the studio.”

“I guess so,” Natalie said noncommittally. “I’ll take a drive around and look for anything suspicious. Then I’ll head back to the station and put in a report. Do you guys have a security system?”

Thatch snorted. No one in Star Valley had a security system. A lot of people left their front doors unlocked when they weren’t home.

“We’ve never needed a security system.” Kyra stood and put on her coat.

“You might want to think about getting one. Just in case.” Natalie opened the front door. “Keep me posted if you notice anything else.”

“We will,” Kyra promised.

Lyric still looked a little steamed or embarrassed. It was hard to tell.

“You two should probably get back to your yoga now,” their friend teased. “I’ll take the safe home with me tonight. That way, there’s really nothing of value sitting around.”

“I should get home too.” Lyric looked at him apologetically. “It’s late, and I’m tired.”

“Sure. We can call it a night.” Like he’d told her earlier, he’d never expect anything more from her than she was willing to give.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Lyric sat in front of Nelly, Doris, and Minnie the way one might face a firing squad. These three never scheduled a chair yoga session unless they wanted to gossip, and she had a feeling she and Thatch would be the topic of choice today.

“This stretch is doing wonders for my arthritis,” Minnie said innocently.
