Tess stopped moving. “My water just broke.”

“Oh, boy.” Now Silas started to breathe harder. “Okay. Everything’s gonna be fine. We can do this.”

“Can we?” his wife screeched. “Because we’re supposed to be at one of the nicest hospitals in Jackson right about now. This isnotpart of my birth plan!”

“Honey…” Kyra took her arm, leading her toward the parking lot. “I don’t think you have time to get to Jackson. I’m not even sure an ambulance would make it here in time. You’ve probably been in labor all day.”

Lyric stepped in line with them. “This is so exciting, Tess!” She might not be able to deliver a baby, but she could be the cheerleader and remind her friend this would be one of the best nights of her life. “The baby is coming! You’ll get to meet the little one soon.”

Tess breathed and nodded, even smiled a little.

Aiden and Thatch drove up in their trucks and both hopped out. It took a group effort to get Tess settled inthe back seat, and then Silas, Aiden, and Kyra climbed in with her.

“We’ve got the girls.” Thatch scooped up Willow and set her on his shoulders.

Morgan peered up at Lyric, holding tightly to her hand. “Is Mom going to be okay?”

“She’s going to be great!” She kept hold of the girl’s hand, and they all made their way to Thatch’s truck. “And you’re going to have a new baby in your family very soon.”

“I can’t wait to be a big sister!” Willow clapped. “This is the best day ever!”

All the way to the clinic, the girls started to brainstorm names for their new sibling.

“I like Charlie for a boy and Amanda for a girl,” Morgan announced.

“No.” Willow scrunched up her face. “Brady for a boy, and Jenny for a girl.”

Her older sister rolled her eyes. “Those are your friends’ names at school.”

“You both have some great ideas.” Thatch smiled at Lyric and took her hand in his. “But sometimes you have to wait to see the baby before you know what to name it.” He parked the truck in front of the clinic.

Both girls scrambled to take off their seat belts and tore into the old house ahead of them.

“How’re things going?” Lyric asked Aiden, who was pacing around the waiting room.

“Sounds like this is moving pretty fast.” He nudged her toward the hallway that led to the exam rooms. “Kyra might need an extra set of hands, and believe me, I’m not qualified.”

“I’ve got it.” Before moving down the hallway, shedirected Thatch to the paper and markers in a drawer. “You guys can draw some pictures for the new baby.” That might make the waiting easier.

Lyric ran down the hall and into the first exam room. Tess was on the table, and Silas was holding her hand, trying to help her breathe.

“Oh, good.” Kyra pulled her to the end of the table and handed her gloves. “She’s going to start pushing. Ambulance is still ten minutes out for a transport to Jackson. We’re going to have this baby soon.”

“Got it.” Lyric pulled on the gloves.

“Everything’s going great so far,” Kyra said soothingly. “Baby’s heartbeat sounds perfect, so now I’m just going to have you start pushing, okay, Tess?”

Their friend grunted a response.

“I’ll let you know what I need,” Kyra whispered to Lyric. “But I’m fully anticipating everything will go smoothly.”

She didn’t doubt that at all with her friend in charge.

While Kyra directed Tess through the pushing, Lyric offered encouragement every now and then. She got teary watching Silas lean over his wife, kissing her head and murmuring softly to her. Such a beautiful moment.

“Okay, head is crowning, so we need one more push.” Kyra handed Lyric some towels and then grabbed an aspirator. “Ready? Let’s go, Tess. Give me everything you’ve got.”

Lyric was crying now, watching this precious new life unfold. Kyra delivered the baby and then secured him in the blanket. A him!
