Trent interjected, “I’m sure Omar would have listened to reason. We’re professionals here, remember?”

Leilah rolled her eyes. “There’s too much testosterone on this call. Where are Olivia and Marielle?”

“Olivia went to check out the storage facility,” Trent told her.

“Why?”

“That barrier in the road is one of ours. Someone broke into the storage barn and took it. That was no easy feat. Our security system is darn near unbeatable. She’s making sure nothing else is missing.”

Something in Trent’s voice made Ryan’s stomach clench. “Like what? What else is stored in that barn?”

There was a long pause. Too long.

“Trent?” he prompted.

“Lots of stuff. Incendiary devices. Tracking equipment. Weapons. Body armors. You name it, it’s in there.”

Ryan blew out a long breath. “Great. Our would-be killers had free access to a big box store for bad guys.”

“That’s why it’s important to know what they might have taken,” Jake told him in a measured tone. “So we know what we’re dealing with.”

Leilah drew her eyebrows together. “Did anyone call my garage to have someone come tow Marie back? Keisha wasn’t there yet when we left, and I haven’t checked in there either.”

“Marielle is actually over there, going through the club’s security footage. Your car’s been secured.”

“And Keisha?” she pressed.

“Okay, don’t freak out—,” Omar began.

“What happened?” Leilah demanded, her voice high and shrill.

Ryan shook his head as she proceeded to freak out. He didn’t have any sisters, but even he knew you never told a woman not to get upset.

“She’s okay,” Omar assured her. “But a black truck ran her off the road when she was on her way to work. That’s why she was late. She waited to give the police a description.”

“Did she get the plate?” Ryan asked, hope sparking. “Presumably, that’s not a coincidence.”

“She did,” Jake said flatly. “And, I agree that the road rage incident was almost certainly part of a larger plan to delay her so these guys would have unfettered access to Leilah’s brakes.”

“I hear a but,” Leilah said.

“But the license plate was reported stolen last week. These guys, whoever they are, are methodical planners.”

Leilah dropped her head into her hands and sighed heavily. Ryan eyed her with concern.

“Any ideas who could be behind this?” he asked his colleagues.

“We’re running through a list of possibilities now. As you can imagine, it’s a long list. Potomac has tangled with a lot of unsavory characters,” Jake said.

“Are we sure this isn’t related to me?” Leilah jerked her head up and asked with urgency.

Ryan gave her a puzzled look. Hadn’t they agreed the attack was too organized and violent to be a racing rival? She caught his meaning and shook her head.

“Not a competitor,” she clarified for his benefit as much as for the men on the phone. “Someone more … vengeful and powerful.”

“Ahmadi?” Omar guessed.

“Yeah.”
