We end up in Manhattan and come to a stop by a street vendor. Seb runs across the street and comes back with three slices of cheese pizza. The driver steps out of the car, taking one slice as Seb climbs inside. I wonder if he’s doing that to give us some privacy?

“How did you know I liked cheese pizza?”

“I heard about the incident at Scuttle’s restaurant.”

“Oh god.”

Seb laughs. “Don’t be embarrassed. Sometimes Kieran needs to be knocked down a peg or two.”

“I guess. Now… spill about the driver, who I assume has a name.”

“Archimedes is his given name, but I call him Archie, which used to make him so angry. We’ve been talking for a few months now. He’s been Kieran’s driver for as long as I’ve known Kieran.” He smiles to himself. “He helped me a lot after my ex broke up with me. I didn’t think I was ready to fall in love again, but Archie didn’t give me much of a choice.”

“That’s really sweet, Seb.”

He snorts. “I guess I should leave out the part where he’s hung, then.”

“I mean, I’m not going to judge.”

We both laugh and settle into easy conversation as we eat. For the first time since I’ve been under Kieran’s care, I finally feel like a normal twenty-year-old.

When we finish eating, Seb taps on the window and Archie slides into his seat, starting the car, driving us across town to a high-rise.

“What’s this?”

“Elsa owns a private movie theatre that only certain members of the Family have access to.” He meets my gaze. “You won’t be bothered here.”

“Thank you, Seb.”

“Let’s go watch Daddy JDM on the big screen.”

I laugh. “Let’s.”

The next three and a half hours are heavenly. I’m able to sit back and enjoy the movie with Seb without worrying about anything. But that worry creeps into my mind as we make our way back to Staten Island.

When we arrive at the house, Seb says, “Kieran texted. He’s here.”

“Where?”

“In his office.”

I nod. “I’m going to talk to him. I…I want to tell him everything that’s happened.”

“I think that’s a good idea.”

“Thank you, Seb.”

“For what?”

“For being my friend.”

We share a small smile before I climb out of the car and make my way toward the house. I can do this. It’s just Kieran. Even if he’s mad at me, he’ll listen. I know it.

Inside, I walk to the office and stop at the door. He’s focused on his computer and doesn’t look up when I knock.

“Yes?”

“Do you have a moment?”
