“How long has he been here?”

“About an hour. He’s four drinks in already. How did the dress fitting go?”

“She was relieved that Clayton wasn’t there but was on edge the whole time.” He gives me a long look. “She’s not sleeping well.”

I already know she’s not sleeping. I watch her at night on the security feeds.

“In two days, she won’t have to worry about this anymore.”

“Care to fill me in on what the plan is?”

“Not yet.”

“Just promise me you’re sure she’s going to be safe.”

“I’m doing my best to ensure that.” I pause. “The rehearsal dinner is going to be a problem. I won’t be there, and therefore have no way of ensuring that he doesn’t try something.”

“You think he’s going to poison her?”

“I wouldn’t put it past him. He was asking around, trying to figure out the potions that George Peters was selling before he died.”

“Peters?” Seb barks out a laugh. “If he’s taking cues from George Peters, then we’re all fucked.”

“My thoughts exactly.” I rub my chin. “Either I let her go to the rehearsal dinner or I create a distraction that will keep the entire Greystoke family occupied.”

“What kind of distraction?”

“A big one. They’re getting a shipment tomorrow. It’d be a shame if their ship never made it to the dock.”

“You sure that’s a good idea?”

I smile. “I think there’s a very good chance their ship isn’t up to code. Fires on old vessels aren’t uncommon.”

“Sounds like a plan.”

“Indeed.”

“Did you speak to Jane yesterday?”

“I did. It’s over.”

“How did she take the news?”

“About like I expected. I heard she boarded a jet to Cameroon this morning.”

“Africa? Is that where the lover lives?”

I nod. “Maybe she’ll finally find happiness.”

I don’t mention that she also sold her engagement ring. For the first time in her life, Jane is going to have to stand on her own two feet. I wish her all the best, but she is no longer my concern. Ari is.

I stand. “Guess I should go entertain the fucker.”

“Want me to come?”

“No, I want him to think we’re friends. If you’re there, he’s less likely to speak freely. Stay and watch on the monitors, though.”

“As much as I want to, I think I’m going to get back to Ari.”
