“Do you know who your real father is?”

“It was my paternal grandfather. He was a monster and caught my mother alone the night before she married my father. She told him and he killed my grandfather that same night.”

“Odin. I’m so sorry.”

He pulls me close. “I know my father loved me, but that didn’t stop me from feeling different. I think that’s why I worked so hard to be the best. To make him proud. Too bad he didn’t live long enough to see me rise to the top.”

I say, “I’ve heard a lot about my grandfather. Mostly how different he was than Grandmama.” I pause. “They were an arranged match. Maybe I’ll get lucky, too.”

Grandmama’s visit has left a sour taste in my mouth, but it’s also opened my eyes. Iwillbe married off to someone. It was inevitable before, and now I fear she will rush into something just to prove Odin wrong.

“You’re in my bed, full of my cum,” he says, his tone hard. “I suggest you stop talking about other men.”

“Odin, we have to—”

“No, we don’t. No match has been made.”

The ‘yet’ is unspoken. We both know it’s going to happen, and soon. My eyes water and I turn my head just so he can’t see my pain.

He kisses the top of my head. “Rest, baby girl. We’ll talk more about this in the morning.”

But dawn brings more bad news.

Odin’s phone rings, and he answers. “Selma. You’re up early. Why, yes, I did say that to your mother. Why? Because she had no right.”

He flinches as Mother yells at him. And I mean yells. She screams loud enough that I hear each and every word.

“I want that girl gone, Odin! I’m tired of her being around. I deserve to be happy, don’t I?”

“Your mother was planning on marrying her off to fucking Gabriel Malevolent.”

“I’m aware, as I’m the one who told her he was single. It’s the best someone like Anna can hope for. The girl should be lucky anyone even wants her!”

Odin says, “I’ve spoken with Malevolent and told him there was a mistake. I suggest you take your last few days of your vacation to reconsider your stance on your daughter.”

I can’t hear her reply, but Odin’s jaw tics as he ends the call.

“Odin?”

He doesn’t answer and stands. “I have some work to do.”

“Odin?”

“It’s a good thing the month is almost over.”

He slips into the bathroom, closing the door behind him, leaving me to my fears as my heart breaks into a million pieces.

Odin

My head throbs as I reach out to different contacts, trying to see what in the fuck Elsa has been up to. Kieran Van der Zee offers the most intel, and none of it is promising. Elsa is gathering an army, just as I feared.

Kieran is on the phone and says, “We need to bring Jafar in on this.”

“Agreed.”

“Why do you think she’s making a move now?”
