My chest is tight as I step into the elevator. Maybe I should have left a note, so they know nothing bad happened to me. But it’s too late for that.

Outside, I see the truck parked across the street. Flynn and Freja wave, making me feel a bit better.

Flynn gets out, taking my bag from me.

“Ready to go on the adventure of a lifetime, partner?”

I laugh at his terrible Southern accent. “Sure am, bucko.”

“Bucko?” His nose scrunches. “Good thing we have a twenty-three-hour drive to work on that. We’ll have to take turns, but it’s doable.”

Freja leans forward. “Um, try again. Anna and I don’t know how to drive.”

He looks between the two of us and I shrug.

“Grandmama didn’t think it was something we needed to know how to do.”

He shakes his head. “Jesus. That’s the first thing we’re going to do at the ranch.”

He motions for me to climb inside the truck.

“After you, my lady.”

I’m grinning as I climb into the truck, already feeling lighter.

This is going to work out somehow. I know it.

I groan as Flynn finally pulls off the highway. We’ve been traveling for the past three days, staying in various motels. I shudder, thinking about the last one. When Freja pulled back the bedding, there were actual bedbugs on the bottom sheet. We all slept in the truck that night.

“Almost there, ladies.”

Freja leans forward, reading the street sign. “Wait. Are we in Oklahoma?”

“We are.”

He turns, pulling into the parking lot of a motel. This one looks clean from the outside, but that doesn’t mean shit. Maybe I am spoiled because I’ve come to miss the luxury hotels that I’m used to.

I say, “I thought we were going to Texas. Was Oklahoma even on the map you printed?”

Because I’m ninety-nine percent sure it wasn’t.

Flynn shrugs. “Gotta keep them off our trail, right?”

Unease creeps through me, which is strange. Flynn has never given me a reason not to trust him, but something about this little detour has me on edge.

“Why Oklahoma City?”

“My favorite hockey team is from here. I thought we could catch a game before going to Fort Worth. Lucky for us, the season opener is tomorrow.”

Freja says, “I’ve never been to a hockey game!” She pauses. “I also didn’t know Oklahoma had a team.”

“It’s a new team. I can’t wait to see them dominate the division. They just signed Cameron Blaise as their center.” He grins. “Their first game against Dallas is going to be brutal.”

I say, “I don’t watch hockey. Or any sport, really. Why is their first game going to be brutal?”
