“Should I make you come for me again?” he growled in my ear.

I shook my head again, not really sure if I wanted a second or not. I was just going with the safe answer. My heart was knocking against my chest so hard it felt like it was trying to escape. “What about Raul?”
He shook his head. “There’s nothing we can do about him tonight.” He didn’t look any happier about that fact than I did, so I didn’t push the issue.
He led me to the door and opened it. My footsteps stuttered as Luca glanced up from his phone. He was leaning against the wall a few feet down, across from our door.
Heat crawled up my neck and into my face. I knew I was red as a tomato right now. It hadn’t occurred to me that he’d come back and be waiting around outside. On the plus side, no one was going to accidentally walk in on us. On the negative… I couldn’t think about it.
Nico eased me into the hall and shut the door behind us. “We’re leaving.”
“Jerry is already outside with the car,” Luca replied. His face was carefully blank.
We returned to the party and Nico hissed out a breath. I glanced over and saw a handsome man motioning to him. “Wait here,” he growled at me and Luca. “I need to speak to Tristano before we go.” He brushed his lips over my temple and disappeared into the crowd.
Easing back into the shadows, I watched as people milled around. Luca stood silently next to me.
“I didn’t realize you were coming tonight,” I told him.
“I go to all of these things. Someone has to watch Nico’s back.”
“He doesn’t seem like he needs someone to take care of him,” I said wryly, glancing over to where the man in question was deep in conversation. I felt his eyes look our way occasionally, so I knew he was keeping an eye on me.
Luca grunted. “Even the most powerful men need someone looking out for them. No matter how much wealth, power, or strength you have, a coward could end it all by shooting you in the back,” he told me. His face was pinched as he scanned the crowd. It was as though he was expecting someone to step out of the throng of people to try to kill his boss.
I tilted my head and studied him. He refused to meet my eyes. He wasn’t comfortable with my scrutiny. “You love him.” It wasn’t a question.
