My blood ran cold at the thought. It didn’t matter where they took him. I’d find him. “I have someone who can help me.”

I pulled her over into my lap and she settled in with her head resting against my shoulder. Her dogs walked over and curled at my feet, watching over us. I laid my cheek on the top of her head and we sat quietly watching the early morning light dance over the trees.

“Uncle Nico!”

I grinned. Sal’s kids had been answering my calls this way since they were young. I loved all of them, but this particular daughter was my favorite and she knew it. “Hey, Ragazzina. I’m so sorry I missed your wedding.” It was a habit for me to use the nickname I’d given her in childhood. I’d never been able to break it, but she didn’t seem to mind.

“Oh,” she made a psfting sound and I knew all was forgiven.

“I’m also sorry that I don’t have long to talk. I promise once I wrap everything up I’ll come out for a visit. I need to meet your husband and make sure he’s up to my standards.”

Her laugh trilled out over the line. “It’s a little late if he isn’t, Uncle Nico. We’re already married.”

“I know how to make things happen,” I told her dryly, only half joking.

Horrified silence met my statement.

I barked out a laugh and she joined me although hers sounded a little nervous. “Listen, I need your help.”

“Oh, sure, Uncle Nico. What can I do?”

“Dante’s missing-”

Her gasp cut me off. “Oh my God! What happened?”

“Someone took him. I need your help finding him.”

“Of course I’ll help,” she told me.

I filled her in on what happened. She was family. I could trust her to keep everything to herself.

“I’m so sorry,” she whispered. “That’s crazy. I’ll do what I can, Uncle Nico. But-”

“What?”

“If I can’t… if I can’t find him, can I ask Viktor for help?”

I leaned back in my chair and thought it through. Viktor was the one who Sal had help me track down Havoc and the original information on the cartel members. He was married to my niece, and although she wasn’t actually blood related she’d always called me Uncle. Even though I’d only been fifteen when she was born I’d always taken that role seriously. “Do you trust him?”

“I do. He wouldn’t tell your secrets,” she insisted. “Well, to anyone other than his motorcycle club. He’d have to tell his president, probably. Since it could end up involving them. They wouldn’t tell anyone else, though, and they’re no friends to the Guzmans.”

“Alright, whatever it takes to find him. Everything of mine is at your disposal, for both of you.”

“I understand. I’ll see what I can do and if I’m not having any luck in a few days I’ll talk to Viktor.”

“Thanks, Ragazzina.”

“We’ll find him,” she whispered. “I love you, Uncle Nico.”

“Love you too.”

Havoc came in as I was hanging up the phone. There was curiosity on her face, but she didn’t comment. She came and stood next to me.

I pulled her down into my lap. “That was my niece. Well, unofficially.”

“How is one an unofficial niece?”
