“You can’t remake history. You still married Chelsea,” she snapped.

“Yes, I married Chelsea. But I’m here now. With you,” I seethed, feeling my anger rise up to meet hers.

We sat silently fuming, staring each other down. Neither of us budging. Neither of knowing what to do to mend this decade-old heartache.

Then something twisted and turned, and Meg stood up suddenly. She stood before me, staring down at me with hard, angry eyes.“I don’t know if I can get over it, you know.”

I tilted my head back to look at her. “Get over it or don’t. That’s on you, Meg. But I’m here, and I want you, and I’m pretty sure you want me too. So that has to count for something.”

Neither one of us said anything. I was sure she was going to tell me to leave. Or to fuck off. Probably a combination of both.

But then she shocked me right to my core. Still looking me in the eye, she lowered her shorts, then underwear. She stood before me in only a camisole. She was bare from the waist down. What the—?

Then she took my hand and put it between her legs. My palm snug against her warmth.

“It counts, Adam. I’m just not sure if it’s enough.”

Her words were a challenge.

I dropped to my knees in front of her, pulling on her hips. I parted her legs and licked her. Her knees nearly buckled, and I felt high on the power of it. I loved the taste of her. I could easily find myself addicted to her particular flavor. I looked up at her, my lips sticky with her wetness. “It’ll be enough. I promise.”

Meg’s eyes, though clouded with desire, grew troubled. “This can’t be anything, Adam. I need you to promise me it won’t be.”

I didn’t want to make that promise. Deep down, I knew neither of us could keep it. But she seemed to need to keep some distance from me. She wanted to fuck me without strings. And she was naive enough to think it was possible. I knew better. Though, at that moment, I’d say just about anything she wanted to hear.

“I promise. This is just sex. No strings attached.” I licked her again, and she moaned low in her throat.

“No one can know, Adam. This has to stay between us.” She sounded almost panicked.

I got to my feet and quickly got rid of my clothes, then proceeded to remove her shirt. I carefully lowered her onto the bed she had slept in for her entire childhood. I placed a kiss between her breasts before settling between her thighs, my dick pressed against her entrance.

I looked down at her. This woman I thought would never talk to me again and was now naked beneath me. My chest twisted, and I didn’t want to think about what this all meant. “No one will know,” I assured her as I slowly rocked into her.

She met my thrusts. “It’s just sex,” she repeated.

“It’s just sex,” I said against her lips as I kissed her.

“Don’t be too loud. My mom’s a light sleeper,” she rasped into my ear.

I bit down on her collarbone as my cock stroked her deep and long. She gasped loudly, and I laughed. “I’m not the one we have to worry about.”

Chapter 14

Adam

I snuck out of Meg’s house forty-five minutes later. Through the front door this time, thankfully. June was still fast asleep, though as I crept down the stairs, I was paranoid she’d catch us.

Meg practically pushed me outside. “Get out of here before someone sees you.”

I grabbed her by the waist before she could protest and kissed her. “I’ll be careful,” I said when I let her go, giving her my trademark grin. “No one will ever know I just made you come. Twice.”

Meg swatted my arm. “See—over-inflated ego.”

I hesitated on the porch, my keys in my hand. “I guess I’ll see you later?” It was posed more as a question. I didn’t want to sound needy, but I was quickly growing addicted to the feel of Meg Galloway.

Meg leaned against the doorframe, her hair thick and tousled from my fingers. She was fucking gorgeous. “I’ll see you at the office on Monday,” was all she said.

I didn’t like her holding all the cards. That’s not how this was going to work. Hell, if I was going to beg for it. I shrugged, going for nonchalant, even as my insides were on fire with wanting her all over again. “Sure. See you Monday.” I tossed my keys up in the air and caught them. I gave her a wink. “See ya later.” Then I turned and walked down her sidewalk, not waiting for a response. I refused to look back at her.

I could hold the cards too.

It wasn’t until I was in my car that I glanced back at her house. And was disappointed to see that she had already shut the door.
