“I didn’t know my girlfri-,” Dex starts but I cut him off.

“Ex-girlfriend, and we were just done talking.” I glare at him, and he glares back.

“Cool.” Cuba walks past Dex and stops a few steps from me. “You ready?”

Nodding, I look away from Dex, I just want to smack him in his stupid face. “Yeah, I’m ready.” Turning on my high wedges, I stalk away. I hear Dex say something to Cuba, but I don’t catch his reply, I only know he’s close to me because I can hear his footsteps following me into the cold library. Now I wish I’d brought a jacket, but I knew walking to campus would make me hot and I didn’t want to carry it. My feet are already regretting the half-mile walk.

We quietly walk to our room, I don’t know if I should thank him for stepping up for me out there, or not, because I totally had it covered. Then again, this could work in my favor. I wait for the door to close behind us to say something.

“Um, thanks-” I start, but Cuba cuts me off as he takes off his backpack.

“Dex Collins, really?” He slides into a chair at the table. “I thought you were smart, Arrow.”

I stand there for a second frozen, did he just call me stupid? He did, he is totally saying I’m stupid.

Huffing, I take a seat across from him, pulling the strap of my messenger bag over my head. “I was going to say thank you before you opened your mouth and reminded me that you are indeed the same asshole from last week.”

Gosh, what was his deal? He’s hot and cold, it’s annoying.

He just shrugs, that seems to be his normal response so far. I glare at him as he takes out his textbook and laptop, clearly ignoring my death stare. This whole mission I conjured up in my head was starting to feel impossible, working with him is going to drag because he can’t decide if he wants to be an asshole or not.

Taking a deep breath, I follow suit and take out my laptop, textbook, and notes. “So where are you, did you read the pages?” I get settled, it’s his silence that finally makes me look at him. “Seriously?” I can tell by the look on his face that he didn’t read them.

Cuba looks away from my gaze. “I just couldn’t get into it, it’s boring.”

My hand flies to my chest. “Boring?” I voice hitches. “History is anything but boring. History makes everything we do make sense. There is so much that makes the world what it is today.”

His eyes widen and his lips twitch like he wants to laugh. “Did I hit a nerve?”

I almost come back about the history of basketball but I’m not that petty, unlike him. “No nerve hit, Cuba.” I smile brightly at him. He gives me an odd look, but I shake it off. “Do you want to try and read those pages again or would you like to sit crisscross applesauce in front of me and I can read to you like a child.” Of course, no nerve was hit, it’s just my passion he insulted.

His little smirk fell. “What did you just say?” He seemed more shocked than anything, but I wasn’t backing down, so I arched an eyebrow.

“You heard me.” My eyes lock back on his. From the way Dex changed his whole demeanor when he realized it was Cuba behind him tells me that Cuba is someone that isn’t used to people talking to him a certain way. I hit a nerve with him. Good.

His jaw muscle tenses and his eyes narrow but, instead of saying anything, he flips open the textbook and cuts his eyes away from me. He reads in silence, stopping to text on his phone here and there. I try to focus on preparing for my fall classes, but I can’t help but steal glances at Cuba. He literally makes my blood boil, but dammit if I still don’t find myself attracted to his smooth, mocha, tattoo covered skin and hazel eyes. I really shouldn’t be thinking of any guy at all, especially after Dex, but one can crush right? Even if my crush is an asshole who dislikes me.

His phone vibrates off the table, he has been texting someone, and of course I’m curious if he’s talking to a girl. The thought annoys me. He lets some slutty girl get to know him and he can’t even be nice for five seconds to me. I’m starting to get irritated with my attraction to him.

I hear my phone vibrate in my bag, and usually I don’t pick it up during a session, but since someone didn’t read the reading material it’s kind of hard to tutor. Grabbing my phone, I see that it is India.

Indi: So, there is this guy and he wants to take me out, but his cousin is in town. Down for a double date? Please. It’s Alex from the hockey team, he is hot so I’m sure his cousin, from New York, is hot too.

I groan, last time I went on a double date with India the guy was like two thousand pounds, and kept calling me Daisy, because he couldn’t remember my name.

“Is that your boyfriend, good ole Dex?” He drops his phone on the table.

“Ex-boyfriend,” I correct him. “And no, I have a date actually.”

Cuba scoffs. “Really? What’s his name? Dex number two?” Oh, he’s judging me on my selection of men?

I think quickly. “Chris, not that it should matter to you.”

He smiles. “Oh, it doesn’t.”

I want to throw my phone at his face. “Good. Go back to texting whatever chlamydia ridden girl you were talking to.”

His smile grows even bigger. “Oh, but that matters to you.”
