He nods but doesn’t look up. Rolling my eyes, I look to my own screen. I still have that paper I need to finish before classes start, and I want to tweak what I wrote so far.

We sit in a comfortable silence for what feels like forever, I only know he’s here by his breathing, I wouldn’t dare steal a glance at him.

“How did your date go?” I hear him lean back.

Glancing up and back at my screen, I roll my eyes. “You mean after or before you crashed it?”

“Uh, sorry about that. I shouldn’t have crashed even if you were with a clown.”

My lips twitch, not to laugh, because Aaron was a clown. “Don’t worry about it.” I pause. “Do you think I have a smart mouth?” I automatically regret asking, I brace for his insult.

Cuba frowns instead. “What do you mean?”

Slumping back in my seat, I bite the corner of my lip. “He said I’m pretty but that my smartass mouth isn’t cute.” I recall his words.

He shakes his head like that’s crazy. “Why would he say that? Were you mean to him too?”

My hand shoots to my chest. “What? I’m really nice.”

A deep laugh ripples from his chest and I love the sound. “Of course, so what did he say to piss you off?”

“He asked if you were my ex or something and does he have to worry about you.” My eyes lock on his. “I told him as far as you were concerned it wasnone of his business.”

Cuba doesn’t look away from me, his lips pull into smirk. “I see why that would make him mad.”

I laugh lightly. “Yeah, maybe.”

He goes back to reading and I just can’t look away. “So, can we call a truce, at least until our time is up?” I ask. “We don’t have to talk unless you want to, and I won’t force conversation. Deal?”

His hazel eyes narrow softly as if he’s thinking, he slowly nods. “I think I can deal with that, I’ll try not to be such an asshole and crash your dates.”

That makes me smile. “Deal, never know how many dates I’ll have.”

And just like that his smile fades and his eyes flick away from me. What did I say? He was being a normal human being and now it’s back to radio silent. I bite my lip to stop myself from asking if I said something wrong. It’s like I make headway only to realize I just went around in a circle.

I’m getting nowhere.
