Cuba

Bliss arches a perfect eyebrow, waiting for me to explain. I wonder who texted her because, right now, I’m pissed. I wanted to talk to her before word got around, but clearly, my relationship status is front page.

“So, last night I was a little mad and I may or may not have said you were my girlfriend,” I try to explain.

“Either you did, or you didn’t, Cuba,” she says calmly, and I wonder if I should be scared for my life.

Flopping down on the couch next her I sigh. “Babe.”

“Cuba.”

“Arrow.”

“Bow.”

My lips tug to a smile, but it fades as I turn to look at her, stormy eyes already focused on me. “I miss you,” I admit. “I thought about what you said, and you being my Lola didn’t start to seem so bad. I was going to come to you, then I saw you at the party and all I could do was stare at you.” I take a breath. “I went to get a drink, to get my shit together before going to look for you and that’s when I saw that fucker drugging a drink. We confronted him, and next thing I know your friend is swinging at him. I lost my shit when I realized it was you, he kept going on about you lying about having a boyfriend, and I didn’t think… I said I was your boyfriend right before I broke his nose.”

A tear slips from her eye and runs down her cheek, and she wipes it away before I have a chance. “Thank you for standing up for me,” she says softly. “You know everyone thinks we’re dating now.”

I just shrug. “So.” I don’t give a fuck.

Bliss’s eyes narrow in confusion. “They’re going to figure out it was a lie.”

“It doesn’t have to be.” I don’t hesitate or skip beat. I thought about this over and over, I know what I want and that’s her.

She blinks slowly, her eyes never leaving mine. “Are you saying what I think your saying?”

I nod. “Yeah, I’m saying what you think I’m saying.”

Bliss slumps down. “Huh.” She reaches for the bag of food and starts to take out the items, separating mine from hers.

She doesn’t say anything as she takes the lid off her soup and dips bread in taking a bite. She doesn’t say anything as she sips her green tea. Bliss doesn’t say anything. Not wanting to be a creep and keep staring at her, I unwrap my sandwich, picking up the remote I turn on the TV then Netflix.

I’m about to click resume on the last episode of The Tudors we watched when she starts laughing quietly.

“So, let me get this right.” She sets down her soup. “You ignore me for weeks after leaving some bullshit note on my bed. Then you have a come to Jesus moment and want to be with me. You also tell everyone we are dating while I’m drugged. Youassume I’m going to just fall back in your arms and agree.” Her voice is dripping with sarcasm. “Is that right?”

Now it’s my turn to blink back. Holy shit.

“I didn’t ignore you.” It’s the first thing that came to mind.

Bliss looks dumbfounded. “Seriously?”

“Well, last time I checked, I didn’t have any texts or calls to ignore.”

“You are such an asshole.” She shakes her head. “Unbelievable.”

“What?” I throw my arms up. “Okay, maybe I did go about claiming you the-“ She arches an eyebrow at claimed. “Fine, at dubbing us a couple the wrong way. I’ve never had a girlfriend. Do you want me to write you a note and draw boxes to check yes or no?”

“You seem to be good at writing notes,” she counters.

Running my hands over my head frustrated. “Holy shit, Bliss, do you want to be with me or not because I’m lost.”

She looks at me like I have lost my mind, and I’m starting to think I have.

“Of course, I want to be with you.” She shakes her head and motions to the TV. “Push play and give me part of your sandwich.”

I just stare at her and she winks at me. “Welcome to your new life, hold on tight.”
