But I do find it interesting since I know Dane was away working all night.

DANE

In the deepest hours of the night, when I return home from delivering a baby and setting a broken arm, Lila is waiting for me, as I knew she would be.

I feel her close as I’m washing at the sink. I straighten, her flawless face reflected in the mirror just behind me, her dark eyes looking into mine.

You brought her into our house.

“You prefer I let her die in the yard?”

She wasn’t going to die.

When I turn, there’s nothing there.

I know there’s nothing there.

But I saw her all the same.

I enter the bedroom, stripping off my clothes so I can slip naked between the sheets.

Only an hour or two of night remains. Lila’s still close. I pull back the covers, the scent of her perfume—pear and bergamot—rising from the sheets. If I lie here in the dark long enough, she’ll come to me.

But as my head hits the pillow, the image that flashes on the black canvas of my mind are two eyes startling open, wide and blue as butterfly wings.

My cock swells. I grab it in my hand.

I think of Remi’s nipple between my fingers, thick and stiff and run through with metal…

The sheets aren’t cool anymore, they’re heating.

And the scent of pear is nowhere to be found.

REMI

The next morning, Jude’s up earlier than usual.

“Will you drive me into town?” he says the moment I step into the kitchen.

“Sure. What for?”

“‘Cause I’m sick of sitting around here all day.”

“You could try not sitting around.”

“You know what I mean,” he says. “I’m stir-crazy, cooped up here in the sticks.”

“Well, it has been two whole days.”

Jude doesn’t even dignify that with an eye roll. He’s dipping apple slices into peanut butter, which I suppose is a slight variation on his usual breakfast.
