Martinique loves karaoke to an unreasonable degree. I know exactly what she’s asking for because I’ve endured it severaltimes—six solid hours of terrible singing and worse Jell-O shots, Martinique refusing to leave until we’ve performed “Umbrella” and “Cheetah Sisters” together.
“You got it,” I say without hesitation.
Sensing her advantage, she closes in for the kill. “Three times.”
“That’s blackmail!”
“I learned from the best—the best being your boyfriend.”
“Ha, ha, ha.”
“This is incredible. You’re like a spy…”
“I’m not spying. It was supposed to be just an introduction…now it’s gotten a bit more complicated.”
“I’ll say.” Martinique smirks.
“What should I do?”
“Tell him how you actually feel,” she says at once.
“I can’t do that.”
“Why not?”
Just the thought makes me feel like I stepped up to the edge of a diving board with a pool a hundred feet below.
“Because I don’t know if he feels the same.”
