In that moment, I decide.

I’m tired of being loyal to someone who doesn’t keep his promises to me. I’m tired of playing by the rules in a rigged game.

Sullivan isn’t trying to hurt Angus—he’s just trying to make a deal.

And if all’s fair in love and war…then it sure as hell must be in business.

Maybe it’s the wrong choice, morally speaking.

But it also feels…fair.

I nod along to Angus while my mind fills with my own plans.

SULLY

Theo calls me a whole two days sooner than I expected. Angus must bereallyobnoxious.

I try not to chuckle too much as I pick up the phone.

“Hey, stranger.”

“I thought we wereold friends.”

Theo sounds angry, which puts a low growl in her voice. I kind of like it.

“Let me guess…he offered you a $2,000 raise?”

“He didn’t offer me a raise at all,” she snarls. “He told me I have to work this weekend but promised me franchise rights to a restaurant on Mars.”

I can’t help laughing. Angus is making this so easy.

“It’s a good thing I would never say the words,I told you so…”

“I think you just did.”

Theo sounds so salty, I find myself wishing I could see the scowl on her face.

I check my watch. My next meeting isn’t for more than an hour.

“Where are you?” I say. “Come meet me for lunch.”

Theo rollsup to the pizza place in a Camry that belongs in a museum. The thing is so piebald, I’m impressed how neat and chic she looks when she steps out.

The Theo of old was a gentle, anxious person. The Theo of today has a little more sass. She strides toward the restaurant, head up, shoulders determinedly set. In her dark suit, her black hair in a bun, she’s almost intimidating.

I never would have saidthatin high school.

But when she slides into the seat across from mine, panting slightly, cheeks tinted pink, those big blue eyes wide and innocent, she hasn’t aged a day.

“I’m in,” she says. “But I have conditions.”

I can tell she was planning this speech the whole drive over.

I sit back to hear it, smiling slightly. “I’d expect nothing less.”

“First of all…,” she sits upright with that ballerina posture of hers, ”I’m not going to help you do anything shady. The one and only thing I’ll do is bring you around like you’re my boyfriend. If you’re trying to like, steal files or something?—“
