Even in the frigid water, my body burns with anger. At myself, not at Angus.

I was out of control. And I can guess what Theo was thinking:

You’re worse than he is.

Theo sighs, gazing toward the half-submerged reef where her boss just vanished.

“Well, at least that means I don’t have to go snorkeling.”

“Guess not. Though…you’re already in the water. Might as well see some fish.”

Martinique plops in beside us, opting for a slow descent down the ladder instead of the faster but more alarming way down. She brought two extra pairs of masks and fins.

“Aren’t you coming?” she says to Theo, fitting her own mask into place.

“I wasn’t planning on it…” Theo reaches up to grasp the bottom of the ladder.

She gazes up at the remaining guests on deck, her nose scrunching. She’s probably remembering that if she climbs up there, she’s going to have to entertain whoever remained on board, while if she stays in the water, she’s got no one to please except me and Martinique.

“Stick with us,” I urge. “I’ll fight off any sharks.”

Theo gives me a small smile that shows a hint of those pretty teeth. “You scared them off, fucking up Angus.”

“What did he do to Angus?” Martinique perks up. She was busy with the snorkel gear.

“Tried to drown him,” Theo says nonchalantly.

“Wish you’d tried harder,” Martinique mutters.

She finally gets her mask as tight as she likes and sets the snorkel spout in place.

“Cmomom!”she trumpets through the tube, diving down into the water with a flick of her fins.

“Ready?” I say to Theo, holding out my hand.

She gives the dark water one more nervous look, then links her wet fingers with mine.

“Don’t let go of me.”

Theoand I float just beneath the surface, hand in hand. At first, I hold onto her to keep us together so I can match her glacial swimming pace. Martinique is part dolphin and has already left us far behind.

Soon, Theo loses her death grip on my hand, and I can tell she isn’t nervous anymore. I keep our fingers linked becausefloating like this, in the sun-warmed upper layers of the ocean, is surprisingly…nice.

We gaze down into a diorama of fish, coral, urchins, and crabs, long ribbons of seaweed trailing against our legs.

With Angus occupied and no one else around, there’s nothing to worry about, no schemes and no strategies. It’s one of the rare instances where I can just relax.

Theo’s dark hair floats around her face in a storm cloud. Her limbs flash silver as she passes through bars of sunlight, the low-cut swimsuit clinging to every curve.

I’ve tried not to look at her body in that suit, but I have to admit, Theo was hiding a whole lot more than I expected…the shape of her breasts is so natural and beautiful that I’ve already imagined them naked ten times at least while sternly reminding myself that it’s a mystery that will never be answered.

There’s no talking down here. My communication with Theo becomes a pantomime where she touches my shoulder to show me the brightest fish and I tug her hand to gently take her where I want to go.

Dunking our faces beneath the water reveals this whole other world, full of life and movement, invisible from the surface.

Every person is an ocean, with unknown depths. In the hearts of some lie hidden treasures, while deep in others, monsters dwell…

What will I find in Theo?
