Page 9 of Love Contract

Okay. That’s not what I expected him to say.

I thought Sullivan would snort at even the concept of being in love. I guessed a guy like him would consider it a ball and chain or not believe in it at all.

Instead, that was sort of…thought provoking.

“Why will she have changed your life?”

He smirks. “Because otherwise I’m not in love—I’m just having fun.”

Is this man ever not flirting?

I can’t believe I let him pull me in again.

“Never mind all that!” I snap. “Stop distracting me.”

“You were the one asking personal questions.”

“Answer this question: what is your nefarious plan for my boss?”

“What makes you think it’s nefarious?”

“The fact that it’syourplan.”

Sullivan gives an offended huff. “I don’t know where you developed this villainous opinion of me. Iknowwe didn’t sleep together in high school, and out of all the people who bullied you, I’m probably not even tenth on the list.”

That’s so true I could smack him. The first nine were all girls.

I have my reasons for thinking poorly of Sullivan, as he damn well knows, but I’m not about to let him pull me off topic again.

“Never mind high school. I think it’s evidence enough that the first thing you did when our paths crossed again was blackmail me.”

“It’s nothing personal. You’re my closest connection to Angus.”

There it is.My eyes narrow to slits. “What do you want?”

“I’ll tell you—because I expect you to help me. I’m going to broker the deal for the land he needs to build his new campus. And I already have the perfect location.”

“Of course you do.” I roll my eyes.

“You’ll be impressed when you see it.”

I snort. “You know I have, like, zero power to get you this deal, right?”

Sullivan laughs, and I’m shocked to feel my lips twitching in return because he really does have a great laugh, the kind you can feel all the way to your bones, wild and energizing.

When he looks into my eyes, I see the old Sullivan is still there, alive and well, dancing like a demon in the darkness.

“Theo, I don’t needyouto get it for me…I’ll do it myself. All I need is access.”

His confidence is staggering, but also, he’s crazy. There’s going to be a hundred different brokers vying for this bid. Angus is not going to give it to my ‘boyfriend.’ He won’t even give me a raise.

Besides, there’s no way I’m going to play along with this. I get queasy if I eventhinkabout fudging my tax returns.

Culinary school aside, I really do hate lying. I actually did attendLe Cordon Bleau—I just didn’t exactly graduate.

I was desperate when I applied for the job at Galactic. Desperate and low and just…

Stupid enough to think that a lie is only for a moment.
