“I fucking love that sound.”

She grinned like a Cheshire cat. “Let’s go inside before we do something stupid and give the sheriff a reason to arrest you on your day off.”

I merely grunted, “I’d love to see him try.”

She looked at me, her eyes giving a great big roll as we wandered inside. There were a few people at the tables and sofas, but thankfully, no one was in line.

Janet gave us a friendly greeting and took our orders much quicker today. Her interest in our torrid love affair was clearly waning.

Thank God.

“I take it, you need to head back,” I said after she placed an order for three.

“Yes, but I have a few minutes. I was going to call you anyway.”

We headed over to one of the tables this time, doing Janet a favor as I tried to avoid anything upholstered.

“How did it go?” I asked as we both took a seat. “Your parents, I mean.”

“Good,” she replied before amending her answer, “Well, mostly.”

“I can’t imagine they were thrilled to walk in on you practically naked.” I grinned.

She swatted at my arm and then grimaced, making me laugh. She wiped her palm on my shirt. “Okay, one”—she held up a finger—“I was not naked, not when they saw me. And two”—she added another digit—“as I told them, I’m a damn adult.”

“So, things did get heated.” I winced, feeling guilty she had fought with her parents over me. I didn’t want their relationship to be strained.

“Yes, but not in the way you’re thinking.” She leaned back in her chair. “They’re—well, mostly my mom—are worried I won’t be able to support myself down here.”

That was not the answer I’d expected.

“And are you?” I asked.

“No.” Her smile was wide, brimming with confidence. “Not at all.”

That’s my girl.

“Good. You shouldn’t be. You’re going to do great.” I had no doubt.

It’s what she came here to do after all.

“They want to meet you,” she said, making my heart jump to my throat.

“What?” My voice came out all dodgy and high-pitched.

She laughed, reveling in my discomfort. “After I explained to them you weren’t some random hookup?—”

“I do not like those words coming from your lips.”

“Context, Macon!” she scolded me, obviously amused, and I couldn’t help but laugh. “I suggested we could all make dinner together.”

“All of us?” I raised an eyebrow.

“Well, maybe not all of us.” There was a brief pause before her expression turned more serious. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell them about you.”

“It’s—”

She held up a hand to halt my words. “Don’t you dare say it’s fine. It’s not. It wasn’t, and I knew it. I am not ashamed of us. Not of the way we met or the timing of it all. Anyone who wants to judge us for being happy? Well, they can simply fuck right off.”
