“You’re here to let go,” he said very matter-of-factly.

“I…” Was I?

“You can’t say yes to your boyfriend because you’re still holding on to this house. You need to grieve, say your good-byes, and then walk away. For good.”

Those last two words felt like a gut punch, and I took a deep breath.

“You mean, sell the house?” I gulped. That didn’t sound right at all.

“You can’t start a new life while holding on to the old one.” He shrugged.

“No.” I shook my head back and forth.

I couldn’t.

I wouldn’t.

I loved my house.

But I couldn’t stay here and marry Curtis. I knew that.

“There are too many issues. I have freaking bees! I can’t sell a house full of bees!” I said, throwing my hands up.

He smiled, but it wasn’t the kind that reached his eyes. There was that shadow again. “Luckily, you have someone who can help you with that.”

CHAPTER EIGHT

She’s engaged?

Not engaged.

Almost engaged.

She’s almost fucking engaged?

It shouldn’t matter.

I shouldn’t care.

But the second she had said the wordboyfriend, my heart had launched into my throat, and I’d felt nauseous.

It was bad enough that she had a dead husband I had to feel guilty about, but now, there was a boyfriend, too?

Fuck my life.

I’d been awake most of the night, and when the first rays of sunlight finally drifted through the curtains, I decided just to give up and throw some running clothes on instead.

But even that proved fruitless, and by the end of a hard five-mile jaunt around the island, all I’d accomplished was getting a few pastries and some bagels for my overnight guest.

I tried to be quiet as I entered the house. It was still early, and judging by the way she’d answered the door the other day in that teeny-tiny T-shirt, half awake, I’d guess she was not a morning person. Dropping the food off on the kitchen island, I started some coffee and headed toward my bedroom, intent on grabbing a shower before she woke.

Instead, I nearly walked right into her as she stepped out of the bathroom.

In a towel.

Fresh out of the shower.

My eyes drew down the length of her body and back up again. I couldn’t help it. There was so much skin.
