So, I threw caution to the wind and chased after him.

Without thought. Without reason.

I just jumped out of the truck and bolted toward the door. After I got in, I tiptoed down the hallway and froze when I heard yelling. I raced into the room, and that was when I saw him—pinned against the wall like a rag doll.

I should have been happy to see him, right?

Relieved?

But the moment I saw Curtis, I felt like I was back in my apartment, looking down at him on one knee.

And all I had wanted to do was run.

I needed to stop staring at this damn ceiling.

I picked up the phone and called the one person I needed the most.

“What the actual hell? Do you know how late it is?” Elena said, her voice groggy and hoarse.

“You know”—a smile was already spreading across my face—“there was a time in our lives when the evening didn’t even start until ten or eleven.”

She yawned so loudly in my ear that I had to pull the phone away. “Yeah, I remember. I also remember being a lot hotter and a lot younger back then.”

“You’re still hot.”

“Tell that to the men on my dating app.”

My eyes widened. “Dating app? Did you and Chad?—”

“Yep.”

“Was it bad?”

I was the worst friend on the planet. I should have called sooner. I’d told Curtis we’d been talking, but in truth, this was the first time I’d checked in since I had gotten here.

“No.” She yawned again, this time a bit quieter. “It wasn’t even a big deal really. I just brought it up, and he seemed?—”

“What?”

“Relieved.”

Lines creased my forehead. How was she so calm about this? They’d been together longer than Curtis and me.

“And that doesn’t upset you? That your boyfriend seemed relieved to be rid of you?”

She laughed. “It would have if the feeling hadn’t been mutual. We were both relieved, honestly.” She paused, and I could hear her shuffling around her apartment. “Like I said before, we were better as friends, and we both deserve a hell of a lot more.”

I thought about that and then finally asked, “How do you know? I mean, did you always know and just ignore it? Or was it like an epiphany that just fell from the sky one day?”

“Why?” she asked.

I let out a sigh. “Curtis showed up.”

“Wait. Like, there? At your house in North Carolina?”

“Yep.”

“Are you serious?”
