“Me, too.”

“You’re an amazing person, Curtis. Truly. I wish I could have been that person—your person.”

“I wish I could have been that person for you, too.” His voice was thick. “I don’t regret it though. I will always be glad I was the one who was in the elevator all those times. I’m so glad I met you.”

“Me, too.” And I meant it.

He might have not been the right person, but in a way, he’d been the right person at that moment. He’d been a big part of my life for the last two years, and even though I knew I didn’t love him, I’d still miss him.

He pulled me into his arms, and we held each other for a long time.

For the last time.

Finally, I got up to leave, and I knew he would follow shortly after. There was nothing keeping him here anymore.

“How long will you stay?” he asked, standing at the threshold.

“I’m still not sure,” I answered.

He leaned against the doorframe as I took a step onto the porch. “I hope you find what you’re looking for.”

I gave him one last look, memorizing the color of his eyes and the gentle slope of his jaw. “I’m working on it.”

And then I walked away. For good.

CHAPTER TWELVE

Growing up, I used to make up stories. My mom had always told me I had a vivid imagination. But in reality, I just liked to see her smile.

It was a rarity in our fucked-up house.

But after she died, my imagination had kind of died with her.

Today, however?

It seemed to have miraculously resurrected, and it was running rampant.

After I’d left Marin’s house last night, I hadn’t been able to stop thinking—about her.

About him.

About her and him…together.

Ever since she’d told me she had a boyfriend/almost fiancé, I obviously knew he existed, but like Billy had said, he wasn’t here. It was an easy detail to ignore. Especially when our “deal” had us acting like he didn’t.

But here he was. In my town. In my fucking rental.

I thought back to that moment I’d walked into her bedroom. The moment I pulled him off that bed and shoved him against the wall.

He was different than I’d thought he’d be.

I didn’t know what I had expected, but I guessed I never imagined Marin’s boyfriend would be so…ordinary. It wasn’t that he was bad-looking. He just seemed so very typical, with his lean frame and clean-cut hair.

Shit, when was the last time I got a haircut?

I sat in my cruiser in one of the parking lots by the marina, looked down at my watch, and groaned. It had been twelve hours since I’d left her house.

It was nearly noon. Surely, she’d gone over to see him by now. Or maybe she’d forgiven him for coming unannounced and decided to invite him over after all.
