And she was ready.
Three, two, one!
She sprang.
Leaping forward, forcing her arms over the headrest and his head, her fingers scraping the ceiling of the car, she looped the chain around his neck and pulled with all of her strength.
“Hey—what?” he yelled, the car sliding as his foot slipped on the gas pedal.
She threw her weight backward.
“No . . . oh, shit.” His voice was strangled.
She tugged harder.
He let go of the wheel.
Stepped on the accelerator.
The car careened forward, crashing over brush and rocks, tearing through branches and vines.
She caught a glimpse of his face in the rearview. Panicked eyes, whites showing, glared back at her in horror and surprise.
“Die, bastard!” she hissed through clenched teeth. “Die!”
His eyes bulged with panic.
He flailed wildly, scraping and tearing at the thin, cutting noose at his throat.
Sam’s arms began to ache with the effort, but she didn’t give up.
“You—you . . . stop,” he ordered, his voice strangled. He clawed at his self-made noose, scratching frantically.
The car jerked and tires spun as he struggled, his feet kicking, alternately pressing against the gas and the brake, throwing them both back and forth as he struggled.
Don’t let go. Do not let go!
Her arms were screaming with pain, the rosary digging into her fingers.
He fought and gasped.
She jerked harder.
Ignoring the ache running across her shoulders and down her forearms.
Gritting her teeth.
Never letting up.
Die, you bastard, die!
Pressing her back hard against the backrest, she yanked, sweating. Straining. Trying to get her legs to press against the back of the driver’s seat for leverage, so she could lie down and create more pressure.
She heard him squeal and felt a moment’s satisfaction.
Finally, he was getting something back for all the pain he’d inflicted, all the people he’d killed!
She knew that she was his ultimate target. He’d said so years before, blaming her for giving his sister advice when she’d called intoMidnight Confessions.
