She moved away, going back to her swing, and patted the area beside her for me to sit down. I sat, turning her way and putting my foot down to keep the swing from moving.
“Is your sister different when she’s alone with you?” I asked.
“What do you mean?”
I scratched at my jaw, wishing I had shaved that morning. “I mean, is she sweet and gentle. Is she loving?”
I stretched out my legs and began swinging us. Her expression changed as she thought it over, and then she shrugged.
It wasn’t the answer I was looking for.
“When we were kids, we were close, but once we hit puberty, she changed. She was more worried about being the center of attention and less worried about anything else … including me.”
“Would you say she’s close with your dad?”
She shook her head. “Not really.”
I had beat around the bush enough. I needed answers.
“What’s going on, Addy? What happened to your family’s money? Your dad should be getting the treatments he needs.”
She nodded. “I know. Did Allison tell you everything?”
“No. She didn’t talk to me about this at all. Instead, she hopped on a plane for Paris this morning without telling me.”
I was embarrassed to even say that.
What kind of man didn’t know where his wife was or what was going on with her?
Addy’s eyes went wide. “She didn’t.”
“She did. She left a note but nothing else. I need answers if you have them.”
She breathed in, readying herself to fill me in. “I’m close with my dad. He’s all I have really, but when it comes to Allison, I can’t help you. She’s an enigma to me. I know we’re twins, and we’re supposed to be close, but it’s been a long time since Allison and I sat up over a nightlight giggling. She’s not the little girl she used to be. She’s my sister, and I love her, but she’s exhausting. All I can say is, give her whatever space she thinks she needs, and hopefully, she’ll come around.”
And that was exactly what I didn’t want to hear.
She needed space, but I only needed her.
