“Oh, my God,” she whispered. “There’s really a baby in there.”
She wiped at a tear as it rushed down her cheek, and her hand shook. Leaning over, I kissed her sweetly on her temple.
“It’s the most beautiful sound in the world,” I said, referring to the sound of the baby’s heartbeat.
“It is,” she agreed. “I just can’t believe it’s real.”
“Believe it because it is.”
The doctor pulled the wand away and slid the long condom from it before he tossed it into the trash.
“It’s nice to see such happy parents. Congratulations.”
Addy’s face paled, and she opened her mouth as if to correct him, but before she could, I squeezed her small hand and spoke up.
“Yes. We are very happy.”
And strangely, I was. Being a part of something so amazing left me with a feeling of euphoria.
A baby.
I was going to be an uncle, which was going to be nice, but I couldn’t help but wish it was Allison who was having my baby. I had never really wanted kids before. I hadn’t wanted to even get married, really, but after seeing Addy’s reaction and the love in her eyes, I knew my feelings had changed.
I wanted love.
I wanted my Allison back.
And I wanted to start a family with her.
