My hands were shaking, so I tucked them behind my back. I didn’t want him to see how upset I was about losing what we had on our road trip. He closed his door after getting his things and nodded.

“Yep. I have a ton of shit to do this week, but I’ll be at The Strip on Friday. Do you think you’ll be there?” he asked.

I shrugged. “I don’t know. I haven’t seen my schedule for work yet. If I don’t have to work, then I’ll be there.”

Again, he nodded. “Okay, well, hopefully, I’ll see you there.”

“Yeah. Hopefully.”

Already our conversations were awkward. I felt the tears coming, and I didn’t want him to see me cry, so I quickly wrapped things up.

“Okay. See you around.” I smiled through my pain and turned to go.

Before I got too far, his warm fingers wrapped around my wrist and pulled me back to him. I squeezed my eyes closed and faced his chest. He placed a finger under my chin and lifted my face to his.

“Look at me, Everly.” His breath caressed my cheeks.

I opened my eyes, taking in his gorgeous face before connecting with his green gaze.

“Come home with me,” he said.

I sucked in a breath.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

He swallowed, his throat bobbing with the action.

“I’m asking you to move in with me. I don’t want things to go back to the way they were. I want you in my bed every night, so I can wake up to you every morning.”

My heart bloomed, my love for him growing and filling my chest to the brim. Tears formed in my eyes, but this time it was for a different reason.

“Are you sure?” I asked, my voice cracking with emotion.

He chuckled. “I’m sure about you. I’m not sure keeping you under my roof with all the bad shit that goes on in my house is a good idea, but I can’t help myself. I want you where I am.”

I nodded, agreeing without using the words that were lodged in the back of my throat. I didn’t care about what went on in his house. I was a big girl. I could take it. All that mattered was being with him. The rest we could deal with as it came.

We got back in Erik’s car and drove to Aiken’s place. No one was there, so we skipped past the living room and went straight to his bedroom. He tossed his bag into the corner and fell back onto his bed.

With his arms behind his head, and his shirt stretched tightly across his chest, he smirked up at me.

“Come here,” he said, reaching out a hand.

I dropped my bag and took his hand, letting him pull me forward. Then I climbed on top of him, straddling his hips. He rested his hands on my outer thighs and stared up at me.

“I’m in love with you, Everly,” he said, making my heart flutter and pause for a beat.

“I’m in love with you too.”

His smile was wide, making him look younger.

“Then come here and give me a kiss,” he said, tugging at the front of my shirt.

We christened his bed before moving into the shower and doing the same there. That night when I climbed under the blanket and settled into his arms, I knew I was exactly where I was supposed to be.

35 Everly

MY LIFE SHIFTED AGAIN,but this time it was for the best. Aiken and I became inseparable, and while the guys teased him about being locked down by a woman, he seemed perfectly content with our relationship.
