I had never been inside of Joker’s room, but it already looked as if it had been ransacked. We had barely stepped inside the doorway when the guy holding me was yanked back, and I was released. I spun around just in time to see Crow’s angry face before I was set to the side by a pair of strong arms.

The sound of Aiken’s rage scared me. He stepped ahead of the Saint, Joker, and Crow, and began to beat the guy who was holding me mercilessly. I covered my mouth and stood in the corner, unsure of what to do.

“Find what you were looking for, motherfucker?” Saint asked before he snatched the other guy up and dragged him out of the room.

Joker followed Saint out, but Crow stayed behind and watched over Aiken as he continued to slam his fists into the guy’s face.

Blood splattered everywhere, and the guy quit moving, but still, Aiken didn’t let up. When it was apparent he wasn’t going to stop, Crow stepped forward and pulled him away.

“Don’t kill him in the house,” Crow said calmly as if murdering someone was no big deal.

I wasn’t sure what scared me more. The guy who was holding me hostage as they ransacked rooms or the rage and reaction of Aiken.

He stopped, turning to look at me with blood on his knuckles and splatters of it on his face. I couldn’t look at him that way, so I turned and ran. I barely made it to Erik’s car before I was spun around and pulled into Aiken’s arms.

“I’m sorry,” he said, his lips and breath grazing my temple. “But when I saw his hands on you, I lost it. I didn’t mean to scare you. Don’t ever be afraid of me, baby.”

I nodded, crying into his chest.

He took my hand and pulled me around to the passenger’s side of the car. I got inside when he opened the door for me.

“Stay here. I’ll be right back, okay?”

I nodded, agreeing to stay put.

He jogged inside and was gone for a few minutes before he returned with a fresh shirt and his knuckles wrapped. He handed me my purse before he climbed inside and cranked the car.

“Where are we going?” I asked.

“Somewhere not here,” he answered. “I don’t want you around this shit anymore.”

36 Aiken

I WAS DONE WITH THIS SHIT.The only regret I had about Everly living with me was the shit she was surrounded by. It was fine when it was just me, but I had to protect her.

When I stepped into the house and heard her muffled screams and saw two tweaked-out Border Lords holding her down, I snapped.

She hadn’t given me the name of the fucker who tried to rape her and had beaten her, but I knew he was her mother’s boyfriend. I stopped by her mom’s place all the time, but no one was ever there.

Not having felt the relief of fucking up her mother’s boyfriend, I took out the extra rage on the Border Lord. If he had the balls to put his hands on my woman, then he had the balls to die for it. If Crow hadn’t pulled me off him, I would have killed him with my bare hands.

I wanted Everly away from that. Initially, I had wanted to wait until my money was right, and my shop was open before I moved, but it seemed I didn’t have that kind of time anymore. Not with my girl being under the roof.

I drove us out to The Strip, which was abandoned during the day, and I parked under the old bridge. Once we were parked, I unbuckled her seatbelt and pulled her over the console and into my lap. She straddled me, looking down into my face with worry.

“What’s going on?” she asked.

“I don’t want you in that house anymore.”

Her eyes went wide, and she sucked in a breath. “Are kicking me out? Are we breaking up?”

Not even close.

She was getting upset, so I reached up and cupped her cheeks. I hated it when she was unhappy.

“No, baby. I’m saying I’m going to get us our own place. I was waiting until I saved enough, but I don’t want to wait any longer. It’s not safe for you there. I’ll never forgive myself if something happened to you.”

She grinned at me before leaning down and kissing me.
